OPEN CITY International
Summer School, Piacenza | LANDSCAPE IN MOTION

Politecnico di Milano
• Territorial Campus of Piacenza
• ASA - Advanced School of Architecture

OC OPEN CITY International Summer School
7th edition focuses on the landscape design and its own countless implications.
Piacenza is a topical case-study because of its unique condition of liminal city facing the main Italian river, characterized by the overlapping and interaction of different forms of landscapes: agricultural, productive, urban.

According to the most recent and innovative disciplinary research, the background springs from integration among global scenarios and local architectural transformations. In this line the concept itself of landscape is called to a radical reconsideration, because it's the complex product of multiple, various and dynamic events and it's the result of many interacting ways to look at as well as a brief synthesis of design's heterogeneous, and sometimes contradictory, materials.

The specific topic and the background of the series of lectures supporting  the Po riverside and the buffer zone dividing the city and its own infrastructures from the water. These areas can be designed as city's new limits, they can help to improve the city's environmental quality, they can establish new links with other territories at a larger scale, giving the possibility to new urban uses and to alternative forms of socialization.

The creation of the International Summer School OC OPEN CITY is an important initiative in post-graduate studies, with a strong international vocation, and it’s oriented to the design the “open spaces” in different scales of intervention, from landscape transformation to regeneration of public areas and to specific architectural components. The school is open to students attending the 3rd year of Bachelor Degree Courses and to students attending a Master in Architecture, Design, Engineering and Planning, as well as to PhD research students in disciplines of architecture and urban planning. The workshop aims at maintaining an open dialogue among the different design specialties needed to face the problems arising from architectural, urban and environmental transformations, becoming a discussion forum and a brainstorming workshop, where issues on the general development perspectives of contemporary habitats can be discussed.

The wide consensus this initiative has received during the last 6 editions, both inside and outside the academic scene, is the result not only of the scientific reputation of Politecnico di Milano but also of the innovative format and the fascinating history of the host city. Piacenza is the ideal venue for an initiative focused on complex design problems, both for the quality of its landscape, artistic and monumental environment and for the wide range of case-studies, as well as for its solid traditions in the building sector.

Located in the fascinating buildings and pavilions of the former slaughterhouse, the International Summer School OC OPEN CITY hosts each year tens of students, tutors and professors coming from different parts of the world, gathering to discuss issues of architectural, urban and environmental design. The School high scientific value is confirmed by its intense schedule of lectures and public conferences with speakers of international renown in the field of architectural design.
