Why produce a pubblication about something as broad and undefined as Smart Cities? In many ways, the term itself has become a buzzword. Anyone in any field of work can find a way to plug their projects into the rapidly evolving theme of Smart Cities.

With the publication of The Rise of Creative Class by Richard Florida in 2002, the "creative city" became the new hot topic among urban policymakers, planners and economists. Florida has developed one of three path-breaking theories about the relationship between creative individuals and urban environments. The economist Ake E. Andersson and the psychologist Dean Simonton are the other members of this "creative troika". In the Handbook of Creative Cities, Florida, Andersson and Simonton appear in the same volume for the first time. The expert contributors in this timely Handbook extend their insights with a varied set of theoretical and empirical tools. Riforma o crisi del Governo Urbano

Sono passati più di vent’anni da quando in Italia un movimento riformista ha tentato di rinnovare regole e forme del governo urbanistico e urbano, cercando di conciliare principi di rigore, sviluppo e qualità. Sono state approvate e applicate leggi regionali sul governo del territorio (se pur disuguali o in parte divergenti); sono state sperimentate forme nuove di regolazione e trasformazione urbana, più coerenti con le migliori esperienze internazionali. Ma è mancata una riforma nazionale e le esperienze di governo delle città italiane hanno segnalato in molti casi difficoltà gravi e spesso crescenti.
Le città rappresentano il contesto critico nel quale con ogni evidenza si manifestano fattori di crisi funzionale, sociale e ambientale della vita collettiva contemporanea, mentre la politica non sembra disporre di strumenti adeguati o tende a usarli in modi illusori o devianti. Il caso di Milano può essere considerato per molti aspetti esemplare. Nonostante le enormi potenzialità, la città da tempo sembra incapace di affrontare problemi cronici di regolazione e sviluppo.

Il libro è suddiviso in tre sezioni tra loro interrelate. Nella prima il pensiero e l'opera di un "urbanista gentile", Fausto Curti (al quale il libro è dedicato) rappresentano il pretesto e il filo del ragionamento. I suoi contributi - accurati, pazienti, innovativi - hanno saputo anticipare molte criticità, indicando vie utili per provare (finalmente) ad affrontarle. Nella seconda sezione diversi contributi propongono una riflessione critica sullo stato e sulle prospettive riformiste del governo del territorio in Italia. Il caso di Milano è descritto nell’ultima sezione come laboratorio esemplare nel quale questioni e ipotesi cruciali possono essere utilmente discusse e messe alla prova.

Scenes, Actors and Spectacles in Contemporary Cities

Internationally renowned architects are at centre stage in public debates, not only with reference to designing aesthetically striking artefacts, but also to urban regeneration programmes and urban branding. The narrative of the "Bilbao effect" has been spreading worldwide, apparently leading cities to compete in collecting spectacular projects and buildings, sometimes with little regard for their urban context, size and functions in the global market. Despite the fact that these forms of urban development have been changing the landscape in several cities, attention and explanations regarding the rationalities implied in such decision making and localization processes are today limited and sometimes misleading.

The authors offer a critical reappraisal of oversimplified interpretations of star architecture and its many urban implications. Drawing on the study of relevant architectural decision-making processes in Bilbao, Abu Dhabi, Paris, New York City and the Vitra Campus and on an original photographic corpus, the book argues that these phenomena have high territorial variety, depending on local as well as more contingent factors.
It explains that architectural and urban spectacles are often used by urban policymakers in order to drive political consensus, maximize media exposure and eventually cover economic and real-estate interests, potentially inducing perverse or even paradoxical effects.
The role and autonomy of architects and planners are evidently weaker in these postmodern urban conditions; nonetheless this book pragmatically outlines critical perspectives for interpreting architectural and urban projects as meaningful elements of contemporary urban landscapes.

Davide Ponzini received his PhD in Urban Planning from the Politecnico di Milano, where he is currently Assistant Professor of Urban Planning. His research interests are planning theory and urban policy tools, urban and cultural policy. He has been a visiting scholar at Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University and Sciences Po Paris. His research work has been published in the main scientific journals in the planning and architectural field ("Urban Studies", "Cities", "Environment and Planning C", "European Planning Studies" and others) and has been presented in international congresses, lectures and seminars. Author of the book Il territorio dei beni culturali (Carocci, Rome 2008) and co-author, with Pier Carlo Palermo, of the book Spatial Planning and Urban Development: Critical Perspectives (Springer, Heidelberg and New York 2010).
Michele Nastasi received his Master of Science in Industrial Design at the Politecnico di Milano, where he teaches Architectural Photography. Since 2004 he has been working as a photographer of architecture, urban landscape and interiors for international architectural firms and magazines, as well as developing his own research projects. His pictures have been published in journals and magazines ("Lotus", "A + U", "Abitare" and others), books (recently, Counterpoint: Daniel Libeskind in Conversation with Paul Goldberger, Monacelli Press, New York/Birkhäuser, Basel 2008, and Daniel Libeskind and the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Rizzoli International, New York 2008) and exhibited at the Biennale di Venezia and in other personal and collective exhibitions in Europe and the USA. Living in the Endless City

This book investigates the links between the physical and the social in cities. It is not an academic exercise, but one that stems from a sense of urgency that something needs to be done to address the dynamics of urban change described by the statistics on the front cover. With half of the seven billion people on earth living in cities, a substantial proportion of global GDP will be invested in energy and resources to accommodate a mass of new city dwellers over the next decades.1 The form of this new wave of urban construction and the shape of our cities will have profound impacts on the ecological balance of the planet and the human conditions of people growing up and growing old in cities. That is why cities, and their design, matter.

A sequel to The Endless City, this book adds to the global debate on the future of cities with new research on Mumbai, São Paulo and Istanbul, yet builds on the accumulated knowledge and experiences of six other cities – New York, Shanghai, London, Mexico City, Johannesburg and Berlin. 8 It is a distillation of more than five years of collaborative work that has brought together several hundred people who perhaps, before the Urban Age project, did not see themselves as ‘urbanists’ per se. Traffic engineers, mayors, criminologists, architects, sociologists, planners … perhaps, but not urbanists.

The book is divided into three sections: ‘Cities’ contains visual essays and analytic texts which mirror the content of Urban Age conferences held in the three core cities from 2007 to 2009; ‘Data’ is a compendium of vital statistics of all nine Urban Age cities, accompanied by a critical narrative and the results of opinion polls carried out among local residents; ‘Reflections’ collects the thoughts of scholars and practitioners who have followed our project, offering their perspectives on the lessons learnt for the twenty-first-century city.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Ricky Burdett is Professor of Urban Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and director of LSE Cities and the Urban Age programme. He is a Global Distinguished Professor at New York University. He was Chief Adviser on Architecture and Urbanism for the London 2012 Olympics and now advises the Olympic Legacy Park Company.
Deyan Sudjic is Director of the Design Museum in London. Founded in 1989, the Design Museum is the UK's cultural champion of design and has won international acclaim for exhibitions of modern design history and contemporary design. From 2000 to 2004 he was Editor of Domus, the international magazine of art, architecture and design, and he was Founding Editor of Blueprint magazine from 1983 to 1996. Before joining the Design Museum in August 2006, Deyan Sudjic was Dean of the Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at Kingston University, Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art, and the Observer design and architecture writer.

Urban Design Since 1945 - A Global Perspective reviews the emergence of urban design as a global phenomenon. The book opens with the urgent need to rebuild cities and re-house the millions of refugees living in camps and shantytowns at the end of the Second World War. Against this background, the book traces the collapse of the modernist, comprehensive state-planning schemes on both sides of the Iron Curtain as global corporations emerged, concentrating on networks and enclaves. It describes how Latin America and then Asia began a rapid urbanisation process, shifting the global urban centre away from Europe and overturning existing urban design models. This resulted in global megacities of an unprecedented scale, often with large associated shantytowns. By outlining the dominant models in urban design over the last sixty years - the metropolis, the megalopolis, the fragmented metropolis and the global megacity - the book provides an essential framework for students of the subject.

David Grahame Shane: he teaches Graduate Urban Design at the Columbia University and undergraduate students at Cooper Union in New York. He has lectured widely and published in architectural journals in Europe, the USA and Asia. The Urban Potential of External Territories

The urban potential of the territory seems first and foremost to evoke the rediscovery of an anchorage to the land, in the sense that the city receives an appeal from the territory to reflect on the sense of man's home, as a quest for the primary elements of its construction, a search for urban essence.
On a horizon that appears to be urging us towards environmentally-oriented urban life, promising perspectives seem perhaps to be opening up for the vast territories rich in nature and history for the construction of possible urban worlds.
This book explores the current reasons for the relations between territories and urban settlement, outlining a perspective of environmental city that will retrieve the historic depth and sense of the territory to relaunch them in current terms. The authors highlight the original ways the territory is brought to the attention of an urban life that, precisely through these new relations, is renewed and finds the light of a perspective. The projects illustrated propose selective re-centring of the city on its environmental cornerstones, to some extent external to the usual dynamics of the city, highlighting structure-territories that reveal in their natural and historic wealth the generating force of a different kind of settlement space. In these territories the project, even with the smallest action, makes public contemporary space emerge, disclosing a common world of urban meanings in the territory of the city.

Il potenziale urbano del territorio sembra in primo luogo richiamare la riscoperta di un ancoraggio alla terra, nel senso che dal territorio la città riceve un richiamo alla riflessione sul senso della casa dell'uomo, come ricerca degli elementi primari della sua costruzione, una ricerca dell'essenziale urbano. In un orizzonte che sembra spingerci verso una vita urbana orientata in senso ambientale, sembrano forse aprirsi per i vasti territori densi di natura e di storia prospettive promettenti per la costruzione di mondi urbani possibili.
Il volume esplora le ragioni attuali delle relazioni tra i territori e l'insediamento urbano, delineando una prospettiva di città ambientale che recupera la profondità storica e il senso del territorio e li rilancia in termini attuali. Gli autori mettono in luce i modi inediti in cui il territorio è posto all'attenzione di una vita urbana che proprio attraverso queste relazioni inedite si rinnova e trova la luce di una prospettiva.
I progetti illustrati propongono un ricentramento selettivo della città sui suoi cardini ambientali, in un certo senso esterni alle dinamiche consuetudinarie della città mettendo in luce territori-struttura che rivelano nella loro densità di natura e di storia la forza generatrice di un ordine diverso dello spazio insediativo. In questi territori il progetto anche nei suoi gesti più piccoli fa emergere lo spazio pubblico contemporaneo, scoprendo un mondo comune di significati urbani nel territorio della città.

Giovanni Maciocco is Professor of Town and Regional Planning, Director of the Department of Architecture and Planning and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sassari. His works include: People and Space. New Forms of Interaction in the City Project, with S. Tagliagambe (eds., Springer, 2009); Enhancing the City. New Perspectives for Tourism and Leisure, with S. Gianfranco Sanna is a researcher in Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sassari. At present he is teaching Architectural Design and Planning. The Landscape of Contemporary Infrastructures

Around the globe the importance of infrastructure as the motor of economic development is rising owing to increasing mobility and the need to make urban territories accessible. As a result, infrastructure networks are among the most complex and significant design tasks today. This book investigates how the design of infrastructure actively influences the organization of the inhabited landscape. ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Kelly Shannon is Professor of Landscape Urbanism at the University of Leuven. She has been a visitig professor at the University of Colorado in Denver, the University of Catalonia in Barcelona, and the AHO School of Architecture in Oslo. She contributes to a number of European periodicals and regularly participates in international design competition. She is co-editor (with Bruno De Meulder) of Eplorations of/in Urbanism and Urban Fascicles OSA, two book series from SUN Publisher in Amsterdam. Her research is at the intersection of urban analysis, mapping and new cartographies, design and landscape urbanism. More specifically, her work focuses on the development of landscape urbanism strategies that work with water and topography.
Marcel Smets, Professor of Urbanism at the University of Leuven and Flemish State Architect (2005-2010). He was founding member of ILAUD (1976) and a visiting faculty member at University of Thessaloniki (1985) and at Harvard Graduate School of Design (2002-2004). He served as critic for Archis, Topos, Lotus, Casabella and has been juror for many competitions. He was chief urban designer of projects in Leuven, Antwerp, Hoeilaart, Rouen, genoa and Conegliano. Through numerous research projects, published articles, and his own urban design practice, Smets has explored both the theoretical and practical relations between urbanism, mobility and landscape.

Considerazioni sull'urbanistica

Un profondo cambiamento segna l’urbanistica e l’architettura di questi ultimi due decenni e si esprime come lontananza dal progetto moderno, apertura di nuovi problemi, modifiche di linguaggi e tecniche. Al cambiare di tutto o quasi si sovrappone un discorso critico che non è mai sembrato così disarmato, poco attento a osservare ciò che l’urbanistica fa, il modo in cui argomenta ciò che fa, in cui interpreta problemi, chiarisce intenzioni, produce giustificazioni, cambia linguaggi. Manca una migliore descrizione dell’urbanistica e del suo progetto che sia anche un tornare a descrivere, osservare, interpretare i temi del discorso urbanistico; chiarire ed esplicitare i modi messi in atto per ordinare il mondo sensibile esercitando un’azione politica al di là degli aspetti normativi e della ricostruzione del negoziato. In mancanza di un tale atteggiamento è fin troppo facile parlare di difficoltà, sconfitta, impoverimento.

Scopo di questo libro è provare a descrivere alcuni aspetti dell’urbanistica italiana di questi ultimi vent’anni. Al di fuori di un atteggiamento nostalgico, di perdita e al di fuori di una entusiastica accettazione delle condizioni contemporanee. Un tale compito si giustifica con la convinzione che entro una situazione difficile permangano importanti spiragli di conoscenza e azione, che lo sfondo disegnato da coloro che pensano a un impoverimento sia realistico, ma non racconti tutto. Che in esso si possa riallacciare un’azione affermativa: una certa libertà di movimento e di pensiero.

The Work of Palmbout Urban Landscapes

Palmbout Urban Landscapes, founded in 1990, is now one of the leading urban design and planning offices in the Netherlands. It exemplifies current practices of urban planning, with an approach characterized by a constant search for a new relationship between urbanism, architecture, and landscape architecture. In this process of experimentation, Palmbout Urban Landscapes has established a profile not only in the field of the relationship between urban planning and architecture but above all in terms of mutual interactions between urban planning, analysis and design of landscape, and infrastructure.
The book documents some fifteen projects organised into six thematic blocks, including such extensive projects as Amsterdam IJburg - a design for an urban extension to Amsterdam with a total area of 450 hectares, 18,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, 30,000 square metres of stores and other facilities - and Maastricht Belvedere - a restructuring of 280 hectares of a former industrial site with 4,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, parking lots and a vehicle bridge

• Frits Palmboom (1951) trained in urban planning at the Technical University, Delft. From 1981 to 1990 he worked for the Urban Development Department, Rotterdam, where he was involved with the Prinsenland and Noordrand projects. ln 1990 he established his own urban design practice and in 1994 entered a partnership with Jaap van denBout. Palmboom is active in education at various universities and academies. In 2001 he was a visiting professor at the University of Louvain. His publications include Doel en Vermaak in het Konstructivisme (1979), Rotterdam, verstedelijkt landschap (1987), Kanjers en Knoerten in de binnenstad van Amsterdam (1995) and Buitenplaats Ypenburg, de conditionering van het verschil (2000).
• Jaap van den Bout (1953) trained in architecture at the Technical University, Delft. From 1981 to 1994 he worked with the Urban Development Department, Rotterdam, on projects including the D.W.L. site and the Kop van Zuid. ln 1994, together with Frits Palrnboom, he established Palmboorn & \/an den Bout Urban Designers. He is active in education at various universities and academies. Since 2000 he has been a visiting professor in urban design at the Technical University, Delft. Among his publications are Engeland in de 18° en 19° eeuw (1975), Hoogbouw en Verstedelijking (1991) and De Kop van Zuid (1994).
• Jeroen Ruitenbeek (1968) trained as an architect at the Technical University, Deltt. In 1991 he studied atthe Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona. From 1994 to 1997 he vvorked for the Urban Development Department, Rotterdam. Since 1997 he has vvorked at Palmboom and Van den Bout Urban Designers. In 2008 he became a partner of Palmbout Urban Landscapes. Ruitenbeek has done spatial-historical research into the postwar neighbourhoods of The Hague and Rotterdam and published in De Wederopbouvv (The Hague, 2002) and in Van Pedrecht tot Ommoord (Rotterdam, 2005).

Questo numero della rivista Contesti non tratta, come di consueto, un tema monografico, ma ha scelto di dedicare le sue pagine a illustrare la produzione scientifica di un gruppo di studiosi che si autoriconosce nella scuola territorialista italiana. Nel corso di più di un ventennio si è definito in Italia un approccio alla ricerca-azione delle discipline territoriali che - partendo dalla rivisitazione identitaria del territorio - ha sviluppato teorie, metodologie ed esperienze sui temi dello sviluppo locale autosostenibile, allargando i confini disciplinari a settori anche all’apparenza lontani. Questa storia è stata restituita con saggi e ricerche che hanno ordito un articolato fluire di narrazioni in cui sguardi interni ed esterni si sono incontrati. I documenti che si susseguono nel numero descrivono approcci, punti di vista, esperienze, azioni, riflessioni che configurano un racconto collettivo, come collettiva è stata l’esperienza del gruppo.
Entrare e uscire dalla scena è stato il primo obiettivo della struttura del racconto, articolato fra saggi, scritti da studiosi di diverse discipline che portano uno sguardo esterno all’esperienza del gruppo, e ricerche, osservatorio regionale e glossario, scritti dall’interno, da quell’interiorità che proviene dalla pratica costante della ricerca/azione a vario titolo perseguita dai componenti della scuola.

An Atlas of roads and railways

Figures Infrastructures is a unique exploration into the language of cartography. The book demonstrates the capacity of maps to constructively re-imagine the everyday urbanised territory.

Case Study
The case study of Figures infrastructures is the landscape of infrastructures portrayed in section E-18 to H-16 of the Michelin roadmap n.533 "regional Benelux". Crammed with lines of all sorts, this section of the Michelin roadmap points the way in the Leie-Schelde interfluvium. The cut-out roughly follows the contour of a square stretched around the cities of Ghent, Kortrijk (Courtrai) and Doornik (Tournai).

Method
The content of a single map is recomposed into the format of a book and becomes an atlas. The lines on the map are a given. As they are more or less straightforward representations of the existing transport infrastructures, they remain unaltered. They are however subject to a rearrangement: the given lines are forced into a new medium. By transferring the lines into the format of the atlas, the reconception of the infrastructural networks takes on a renewade shape. The aura of precision and comprehensiveness emanating from the familiar Michelin roadmap, which gives confidence to the traveler, is abandoned. In the space of the book, stories are densely stacked, Cartesian projection moves over for multiple composition. Vice versa, the format of the atlas is expanded to assimilate and amplify the reconception of the infrastructural networks.

Table of contents
The structure of the atlas is topological, unraveling the spatial dynamics between the infrastructural networks - roads and railroads - as they develop historically over time into complex interrelated systems.
An often cited example of a topological map is Beck’s design of the London Underground Map. Shifting the map’s emphasis from topographical correctness to structural (relational) clarity, Beck’s redesign conveys an almost diagrarnmatical understanding of the subway as a system of interrelated lines and stops. Figures Infrastructures uses topology not in the design of its single maps, but in the way the infrastructural lines are arranged across its pages or it’s page-cutting. Within this topological structure, three cartographic "figures" operate between the infrastructures and the maps, each constructing a distinct narrative.

The atlas is setup in three parts, three SITES I, SITE II and SITE III. These three SITES interact with each other, in a way that mirrors the perceived interactions between the infrastructural lines.
• SITE I maps the direct connections between Ghent and Kortrijk: heerweg (military country road), national road, railway and motorway. These four parallel lines are juxtaposed in the four chapters of SITE I. Compiled in a SITE, they picture the bundle of parallel infrastructures that operate between the two cities.
• SITE III deals with a second configuration of parallel infrastructures, at right angles to this bundle. They are the paved roads that distribute the traffic to and from the Ghent-Kortrijk axes across the territory.
• SITE II, positioned in between SITE I and SITE III, where the parallel bundle and the transversals meet, displays the smaller infrastructural patterns that linlk both.

Uno studio geografico operativo

Questo volume presenta un' indagine territoriale condotta su un contesto insolito, qui denominato "Nord Ovest Milano", rappresentato da quella densa realtà urbana compresa tra le citta di Milano, Varese e Novara. E' un campo geografico caratterizzato da un mutamento profondo della sua base materiale, sociale ed economica, oltre che insediativa, e che appare significativo dei processi generali che investono i rapporti tra città e territori nell’attuale fase di mondializzazione, segnata da una crisi globale che ha riflessi importanti sulle società e sulle economie locali. Sviluppo economico, coesione sociale e territoriale, qualità democratica delle decisioni e delle forme di rappresentanza sono questioni fondamentali che descrivono lo sfondo attivo nel quale collocare i temi e i fenomeni indagati, nella consapevolezza che tanto la “quadratura del cerchio” - per dirla come Dahrendorf - appare ardua, quanto essa sembra indispensabile per migliorare il profilo civile delle nostre società. Il lavoro di restituzione dell'immagine, pur assumendo la parzialità del punto di osservazione geografico-territoriale, prova a misurarsi con i temi posti a crocevia delle molteplici relazioni tra spazio e società. Lo studio si propone dunque di contribuire a un processo incrementale (e quindi aggiornabile) di produzione di informazioni finalizzate e di conoscenze operative delle relazioni sociali e decisionali in campo, con l’intenzione di far crescere quel capitale sociale necessario a qualificare la progettualità pubblica.

Ciascuno dei temi propone una chiave di lettura complessa e multidimensionale del territorio del Nord Ovest Milano, interrogandone la costruzione storica dei confini e dei rapporti territoriali (Campo); i mutamenti economici e sociali (Metamorfosi); le forme di organizzazione e composizione territoriale in relazione ai processi sociali e insediativi (Urbanità); i principali progetti e investimenti territoriali in corso (Trasformazioni); il nesso tra geografie politiche e reticoli decisionali (Poteri). Ogni sezione puo essere letta autonomamente, ma ciascuna dialoga con le altre disegnando possibili percorsi di lettura trasversale. Ogni sezione propone inoltre specifici strumenti di indagine e di rappresentazione in relazione all’oggetto studiato, al punto di osservazione scelto e allo sguardo impiegato. Questo studio operativo rappresenta insieme un tentativo di offrire materiali consolidati e sperimentare modi di indagine e forme di rappresentazione “dense” di un territorio. Da questo punto di vista gli autori immaginano che la ricerca possa essere utilizzata in modi diversi e per differenti finalità da attori locali e sovralocali, da studiosi e studenti. Tanto più, e tanto diversamente, essa sarà “usato”, quanto più sarà corrisposta l’esigenza di costruire uno studio davvero “operativo”.

This book is an account of how the Milan Provincial Administration and a team of researchers from Milan Polytechnic worked together to develop a new Strategic Plan for Milan’s urban region. Informed by innovative conceptions of both how to understand cities in the contemporary world, and engage in strategic planning work, this experience has already attracted considerable international attention. The authors now consolidate their contribution into a comprehensive account which continually relates theory and practice. Examining the Milan Plan in detail, the book explains the profound transformations which put great pressure on the traditional descriptive tools so planners must engage in the production of new ones. It also proposes that these transformations affect the way in which urban policies and planning processes are designed. The project offers insights into - and new directions for - planning theory more generally while at the same time testing this powerful and innovative research hypothesis in an important European city empirical study. Alessandro Balducci, PhD, is Full Professor of Planning and Urban Policies at Politecnico di Milano. He was the scientific director of the Strategic Project Città di Città. His main research fields are urban policies, participation, and strategic planning for great urban regions. He is director of the PhD program in Spatial Planning and Urban Development at the Politecnico di Milano. He has been President of the Association of the European Schools of Planning (AESOP) and is currently National Secretary of the Italian Society of Urbanists (SIU).
Valeria Fedeli, PhD in Territorial Planning and Public Policies (lUAV, Venezia), is Researcher and Assistant Professor in Urban and Territorial Analysis at Politecnico di Milano. She has coordinated (together with Gabriele Pasqui) the activities of the Strategic Project Città di Città. Her main research field is urban policies, governance and strategic planning in urban regions.

L'esperienza di Salerno nel panorama europeo

Il gioco di parole nella lingua francese del termine “disegno” tra “dessin” e “dessein” - il primo inteso nel senso di “rappresentazione”, “figurazione”, il secondo in quello di “proposito” o “programma” - consente di comprendere il doppio significato dell’espressione “progetto urbano”. Esso può infatti designare una visione strategica della città nel suo complesso e, nello stesso tempo, l’azione concreta di trasformazione di parti urbane delimitate. La continua oscillazione del “projet urbain” da un significato all’altro sottolinea la relazione indissolubile tra questi due aspetti del discorso urbanistico. Lo studio comparato di numerose esperienze urbane, in particolare quelle di Helsinki, Zurigo, Bilbao, Sesto San Giovanni e Reggio Emilia, dimostra che il “progetto urbano” nel suo doppio significato non è solo un’utilissima chiave di lettura ma si profila come modello generale di rappresentazione e costruzione della città contemporanea.
In quest’ottica è analizzato il processo di trasformazione della città di Salerno, avviato oltre 15 anni fa dal sindaco Vincenzo De Luca e dall’urbanista catalano Oriol Bohigas sulla base di un programma politico strategico (dessein) attuato attraverso progetti urbani (dessins) precisamente delimitati, e subito avviati a realizzazione. Questa concezione del progetto urbano tra visione globale e trasformazione locale è tradotta nei termini giuridici appropriati di un nuovo “piano urbanistico generale”, in stretto rapporto con le proposte attuali di riforma della disciplina in Italia. Il volume si chiude con l’indicazione di alcuni “doveri”, o buoni principi urbanistici, desunti dall’intero percorso di ricerca, che sembrano i più adatti e condivisi per il governo delle città attuali.

La rivista semestrale Crios. Critica degli ordinamenti spaziali si propone di riorientare l'attività condotta negli anni 1994-2008 da un gruppo di studiosi con la rivista Cru. Critica della razionalità urbanistica, nel tentativo di misurarsi con le sfide che gli insediamenti umani sul territorio devono affrontare, in un colloquio più diretto con la ricerca internazionale. Il contributo di Crios, come la sua titolazione suggerisce, vuole assumere gli ordinamenti spaziali come campo complesso su cui politiche e culture insediative si misurano con le energie dissipative della città contemporanea, secondo un'idea articolata, programmaticamente, attraverso tre "sfide".
Queste possono essere riassunte in tre oltrepassamenti, in "oltre", che sorreggeranno le rubriche della rivista:
- oltre la deliberazione democratica e la semplice decisione partecipata, con l'assunzione della logica emozionale e con l'approfondimento del rapporto tra potere e nuove forme di comunicazione;
- oltre la tolleranza, oltre la stessa ospitalitù incondizionata, verso il pieno riconoscimento delle diversità;
- oltre la sostenibilità, con l'apertura a una nuova concezione dell'abitabilità e con la capacità di affrontare gli sconvolgimenti climatici anche attraverso una diversa costruzione della città.

Monograph.it has innovative characteristics which make it different among the traditional magazines. It is at the same time Monography and Review and it follows an original criterium of pictures' itinerary. In fact Monograph.it devotes to architecture's study several pages with complete contents. Moreover there will be a Gallery of pictures of places, bulidings, landscape together with a Monographic Section for one or more cities in evolution therefore conceiving present urban places and landscapes as necessary and permanent elements of the project. The choice of such contents is aimed at surveying the different developments of the project production in the range of the different scales. This will be completed with the further section Researches (puublished in the next issues) which will stress innovation in projects with regard to contemporary cities and schools of architecture. Finally it supports the theoretical debate with a section devoted to some points of view through interviews and essays.

Monograph.it rispetto alle riviste tradizionali si distingue per alcune caratteristiche innovative. Al contempo Monografia e Rivista, adotta un criterio originale di comunicazione del materiale iconografico, dedicando ad uno studio di architettura una parte consistente di pagine e contenuti in forma esaustiva, oltre ad una Galleria di immagini fotografiche di luoghi, edifici, contesti, paesaggi, e una seconda Sezione Monografica ad una o più città in trasformazione, considerando i luoghi urbani contemporanei ed il paesaggio come elementi permanenti e necessari del progetto. La scelta di questi contenuti è rivolta a documentare i diversi avanzamenti della produzione progettuale alle diverse scale e si completa con la sezione Ricerche (che sarà presente dai prossimi numeri) rivolgendo la ricognizione alle innovazioni del progetto e della città contemporanei, nelle sue diverse angolazioni, nelle scuole di architettura. Infine apre alla discussione teorica con una parte dedicata ad alcune posizioni del dibattito, attraverso interviste e saggi.

In Italia esiste una questione urbana che si dovrebbe affrontare con urgenza, in quanto è una delle principali ragioni del declino economico del paese. Negli anni cinquanta è iniziato un profondo cambiamento - una rivoluzione - dell’organizzazione territoriale della società italiana. Lo straordinario processo di concentrazione delle attività antropiche che lo ha accompagnato ha condotto alla formazione di sistemi urbani nei quali le città storiche si sono dissolte.
Si tratta di nuove forme territoriali - intercomunali e disperse - che della città hanno sia la dimensione spaziale sia quella relazionale ma non il carattere costitutivo, ovvero l’identità politica. Il libro discute questa tesi, sottolineando l’attuale incompletezza dei nuovi sistemi urbani (città in nuce), la direzione della loro transizione strutturale e il fatto che abbiamo ancora il tempo, le risorse, la possibilità e il desiderio sociale di un progetto per la città. Da molti anni si sarebbe dovuto adeguare il processo politico alla nuova organizzazione spaziale e relazionale emersa con la rivoluzione territoriale; si sarebbe dovuta favorire la trasformazione dei nuovi sistemi urbani formatisi per coalescenza territoriale in unità di auto-regolazione; si sarebbe dovuta istituzionalizzare la nuova organizzazione spaziale e relazionale. Ora, l’internazionalizzazione dell’economia europea, con i suoi cambiamenti tecnologici e culturali, fa della questione urbana un tema decisivo per lo sviluppo economico del paese. Rendendo mobile la produzione, l’internazionalizzazione ha reso instabile l’economia di ogni città: e le città sono oggi in cerca di economie, così come le economie sono in cerca di città.

Antonio G. Calafati è professore di Economia Applicata e insegna Economia urbana e Analisi delle politiche pubbliche presso la Facoltà di Economia "Giorgio Fuà" dell’Università Politecnica delle Marche. Ha svolto attività di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Economia dell'Università Politecnica delle Marche, nel Regno Unito (St. Antony's College, Oxford) e in Germania (Università di Freiburg, Max-Planck Institut di Economia di Jena). Linee guida per la riqualificazione urbana

Tornare a osservare i quartieri di edilizia sociale per esplorare nuove frontiere del progetto sulla citta esistente. E' questa la sfida che il libro lancia a studiosi, amministratori, progettisti, abitanti delle città pubbliche che, con le loro case, servizi, spazi aperti, oggi si pongono come "figure emergenti" al centro delle configurazioni urbane.
Una sfida ad accantonare facili pregiudizi e luoghi comuni, per cogliere le rinnovate condizioni e potenzialità che questo rilevante patrimonio offre al disegno di futuri progetti e politiche di riqualificazione spaziale e sociale estesi a più ampi settori delle nostre citta.
90 studiosi, 63 enti, soggetti e progetti locali, più di 1.400 studenti sono stati coinvolti nello studio e nell'indagine progettuale di 82 quartieri di edilizia pubblica nelle città di Bari, Gorizia, Milano, Monfalcone, Napoli, Palermo, Roma e Trieste.
Indirizzi per orientare lo sguardo e Strategie per orientare il progetto sui quartieri, un Atlante delle città pubbliche indagate nel contesto nazionale e un Lessico per la loro rigenerazione articolano il volume, invitando il lettore a cogliere suggerimenti ed esempi utili alla costruzione di nuovi percorsi di ricerca e azione.

Il volume restituisce gli esiti del programma dl ricerca nazionale La "città pubblica" come laboratorio di progettualità. La produzione di linee guida per la riqualificazione sostenibile delle periferie urbane, finanziato nel 2005 dal Ministero dell'Universita e della Ricerca. Esperienze, comunicazione, memoria

Fare urbanistica comporta esperienza e richiede memoria; oggi impone anche un progetto di comunicazione. La stagione della "grande trasformazione" lascia un territorio irrisolto ma anche carico di potenzialità, dove si delineano i profili di nuove formazioni urbane, dentro e tra le città esistenti. La ricomposizione territoriale va immaginata, argomentata e resa comprensibile. Ne risulta un modo di intendere e di fare urbanistica che cerca di intercettare le possibilità di intervento presenti nei diversi contesti, utilizzando una gamma di dispositivi progettuali che si combinano ogni volta come risposta alle circostanze. Il libro si compone di tre parti e altrettanti percorsi tematici. La prima parte, Esperienze, enucleando le questioni che dominano l'agenda urbanistica nel mondo occidentale, ripensa i modi per costruire progetti e piani. La seconda parte, dedicata alla Comunicazione visiva, avanza un'ipotesi di lavoro esemplificata attraverso una mirata collezione di testi visivi. La terza parte, dedicata alla Memoria, approfondisce autori e questioni della storia dell'urbanistica italiana. La concatenazione di sguardi diversi ha l'intento di ristabilire un rapporto amichevole con un mestiere affascinante ma difficile, dalla storia particolarmente tormentata.

Patrizia Gabellini è professore di Urbanistica presso la Facoltà di Architettura e società del Politecnico di Milano e direttore del Dipertimento di Architettura e Pianificazione del Politecnico di Milano. Ha collaborato alla progettazione dei Prg di Jesi (1987), Siena (1990), Bergamo (1995) e Prato (1996). Responsabile del Disegno e della comunicazione del Prg di Roma (2000), ha progettato il nuovo piano regolatore di Jesi (2007), è stata consulente scientifico del Comune di Bologna per la redazione di Piano strutturale, Piano operativo e Regolamento urbanistico edilizio e della Regione Emilia Romagna per la redazione del Piano territoriale.
Direttore di Urbanistica dal 1994 al 1998, ha pubblicato, fra gli altri, Bologna e Milano. Temi e attori dell'urbanistica (Angeli 1988), Urbanisti italiani. Un film in DVD e un libro, per avere testimonianza visiva dell'azione e della personalità di una delle figure più emblematiche della costruzione dell'Italia contemporanea: Giovanni Astengo, architetto urbanista, che negli anni più intensi della ricostruzione del dopoguerra e dello sviluppo dell'Italia industriale, ha dato più di altri il segno della necessità e dell'azione della pianificazione urbana e territoriale. Maestro tra i più autorevoli, Astengo non ha tuttavia lasciato dietro di sé un suo libro, un testo che nell'università e tra i nuovi studenti, ne tenesse viva la memoria. I giovani urbanisti spesso non sanno chi sia stato Astengo, né sanno valutare iI ruolo da lui avuto nel condizionare i loro studi. Quattordici interviste filmate originali rilasciate dal suoi più stretti collaboratori, dai colleghi di poco più giovani con cui Astengo ha condiviso battaglie professionali politiche e culturali e da alcuni dei suoi allievi, hanno fornito il materiale necessario al montaggio di questo film, a cui sono state unite sequenze di documenti televisivi originali che di Astengo conservano l'immagine e la voce e ne restituiscono una figura sorprendente e diversa da quella sin qui nota.
Ricomposte in un film di 80 minuti, le testimonianze che raccontano questo personaggio appaiono ora come un convincente strumento d'interpretazione, capace di raccontare un'avventura professionale e scientifica ricollocata nel clima culturale e politico del suo tempo.

Leonardo Ciacci insegna Urbanistica e Teorie dell'Urbanistica alla Facoltà di Architettura dell'Università Iuav di Venezia di cui dal 2001 è Responsabile Scientifico della Videoteca. La sua attività di ricerca è rivolta in particolare alla elaborazione, rappresentazione e comunicazione filmata del progetto urbanistico. Tra le sue pubblicazioni: Progetti di città sullo schermo. Understanding City Design and Form

How do cities transform over time? And why do some cities change for the better while others deteriorate? In articulating new ways of viewing urban areas and how they develop over time, Peter Bosselmann offers a stimulating guidebook for students and professionals engaged in urban design, planning, and architecture. By looking through Bosselmann’s eyes - aided by his analysis of numerous color photos and illustrations - readers will learn to “see” cities anew.
Bosselmann organizes the book around seven “activities”: comparing, observing, transforming, measuring, defining, modeling, and interpreting. He introduces readers to his way of seeing by comparing satellite-produced “maps” of the world’s twenty largest cities. With Bosselmann’s guidance, we begin to understand the key elements of urban design. Using Copenhagen, Denmark, as an example, he teaches us to observe without prejudice or bias. He demonstrates how cities transform by introducing the idea of “urban morphology” through an examination of more than a century of transformations in downtown Oakland, California.
We learn how to measure quality-of-life parameters that are often considered un-measurable, including “vitality,” “livability,” and “belonging”. Utilizing the street grids of San Francisco as examples, Bosselmann explains how to define urban spaces. Modeling, he reveals, is not so much about creating models as it is about bringing others into public, democratic discussions. Finally, we find out how to interpret essential aspects of “life and place” by evaluating aerial images of the San Francisco Bay Area taken in 1962 and those taken forty-three years later.
Bosselmann has a unique understanding of cities and how they “work.” His hope is that, with the fresh vision he offers, readers will be empowered to offer inventive new solutions to familiar urban problems.

About the author:
Peter Bosselmann is professor of urban design at the University of California, Berkeley. International teaching positions include universities in Europe, Australia, and Asia. He directed design workshops in China, Vietnam, Mexico, Italy, and France and was commissioned to work on urban design plans in San Francisco, New York, Toronto, and Tokyo. In 2007 he established an urban research laboratory in Milan, the fourth such laboratory that he modeled after the well-known Berkeley Environmental Simulation Laboratory. His previous publications include the 1997 book Representation of Places.

A partir des propositions élaborées par les 10 équipes pluridisciplinaires dans le cadre de la consultation sur le « grand pari de l'agglomération parisienne l'Atelier parisien d'urbanisme (APUR) livre au débat une lecture synthétique des travaux issus de la consultation internationale sur le « grand pari de l'agglomération parisienne ».
Les dix équipes pluridisciplinaires ont produit, pendant les neuf mois de la consultation, près de 6000 pages. Préfacée par Bertrand Delanoë, cette petite synthèse met en avant cinq idées directrices permettant une lecture transversale des travaux des équipes et analyse quatorze propositions significatives au regard des enjeux actuels.

The complex history has resulted in an urban landscape that is fascinating and frightening, rich and wretched, beautiful and revolting. The ordering logics of its seemingly chaotic urbanism are, at first sight, difficult to understand. However, reading the city and a larger context through both the literal and metaphorical notion of reclamation sheds light on its inherent structure, Within a compressed timeline of events, the processes of colonization, modernization and globalization have radically transformed Mumbai. In this book, reclamation - in the sense of land creation, recovery, repossession, renovation and recuperation - has been (and remains) the driver of states of change. It also give us an insight of possible developments, and show that any hope for the future of the megacity lies in the reclamation of both ecology and civility. In this respect Mumbay is an example we all should look at, and learn from.

Mumbai is in the midst of dramatic transformations. The juxtaposition of the awe-inspiring and heartrending sensations and physical realities is incredibly powerful. The brutality of change in the city forces one to confront new modes of urbanism and urbanisation. The urbanists and planner has the job to re-think, re-visit and re-learn means for intervention. Social, economic and political forces are reflected in an evolving urban form and local architects and planners are struggling to qualitatively intervene.
The first essays in this book are extremely pertinent in their questioning of the status quo and the current mode of city-building. The third part of the book is about hope: which is to be found in the margins. The impossibilities of Mumbai are obvious, the stimulating forms of urbanity are in the margins were they provide clues for possible future interventions.

About the editors:

Kelly Shannon is Professor of Urbanism at KU Leuven, Belgium. Her research is at the intersection of urban analysis, mapping and new cartographies, design and landscape urbanism. She is co-editor of two book series: “UFO” (Urbanism Fascicles OSA) and “Explorations in/of urbanism”, both published with SUN. She led the Mumbai Region Studio within the framework of the KU Leuven European Master of Urbanism programme in 2007.

Janina Gosseye is presently a PhD student at KU Leuven, researching public and collective spaces in post-war Flanders. She completed her first degree in architecture at Saint Lucas in Brussels and received a post-graduate Master of Human Settlements degree at KU Leuven. She participated in the 2007 Mumbai Studio.

This publication was realized by the Research Group Urbanism and Architecture (OSA) of the K.U. Leuven in collaboration with the Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI) and various architects and urbanists from Mumbai. The interpretative mapping and design research proposal were completed by the 2007 Mumbai Landscape Urbanism Studio of K.U. Leuven's MaHS/MaUSP/EMU postgraduate pragrammes.

Ellen Dunham-Jones is associate professor and director of the architecture program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She has published extensively on urban design and criticism. She has taught at University of Virginia, MIT, and Lund University in Sweden and has been honored by DesignIntelligence, ACSA, and AIA for bridging theory and practice. She serves on several boards including the board of directors of the Congress for the New Urbanism and the editorial board of the journal Places.

June Williamson is associate professor of architecture at The City College of New York /CUNY. An urban designer and registered architect, she has authored design guidelines and consulted on numerous urban planning projects throughout the United States. She has been a visiting professor at Columbia University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Utah, and Boston Architectural College.

Britain's New Towns. Garden Cities to Sustainable Communities

Between 1946 and 1976, beginning with Stevenage, Harlow and Basildon and culminating in Milton Keynes, thirty New Towns were created across the UK. Today more than two million people live in the New Towns, and as they undergo phases of regeneration and renewal, this book revisits their story. How did these towns come to be built, how have they aged, and what lessons do they provide for regeneration or the creation of new urban developments today? The New Towns have been described as a social experiment; so what has this experiment proved?
As a national project, the New Towns sat alongside the creation of the National Health Service as an ambitious programme of the post-war government, aimed at promoting social and economic progress in the wake of the Great Depression and the Second World War. Both Labour and Conservative governments created New Towns to meet housing demand and encourage economic growth. Their origin in the campaigning vision of the Edwardian Garden Cities Movement meant pioneering new approaches for the design and management of the towns. These new principles meant a radical break with the traditional form of British towns and cities, which together with the rise in road transport came to epitomise twentieth century urbanism. The evolution of Britain's New Towns, their successes and failures, provides a vital lesson for the similarly courageous goal of creating new urban developments today.

Maintaining and enhancing living conditions in cities through a combination physical planning and environmental management is a newly emerging focus of governments around the world. For example, local governments seek to insulate sensitive land uses such as residential areas from environmentally intrusive activities such as major transport facilities and manufacturing. Regional governments protect water quality and natural habitat by enforcing pollution controls and regulating the location of growth. Some national governments fund acquisition of strategically important sites, facilitate the renewal of brown fields, and even develop integrated environmental quality plans.
Planners internationally have employed green belts to contain the explosive sprawl of cities as varied as Tokyo, Vienna and Melbourne during the twentieth century. As yet, no collection has gathered these experiences together to consider their contribution to planning.
Juxtaposing examples of green belt implementation worldwide, this book adds to understanding of how green belts can be effected in theory and how practitioners have adapted them in practice. The book provides a typology of green belt implementation and reform, enabling planners to grasp why these policies are employed and whether they are relevant to twenty-first century planning.

Con la crisi finanziaria in atto, in Europa il tema delle risorse è sempre più al centro del dibattito pubblico: la percezione diffusa è che, da sola, la democrazia rappresentativa non sia capace di far fronte alle nuove sfide. In questo panorama, l’espressione «bilancio partecipativo» offre un ancoraggio alla speranza. Che cambiamenti promette questa 'utopia concreta'? Quali metodi suggerisce per affrontare collettivamente alcuni mali del nostro tempo? Per rispondere, il libro presenta una sintesi della prima ricerca comparativa condotta in Europa sui bilanci partecipativi. Approfondisce una cinquantina di esperienze e amplia l’orizzonte ad oltre 150 pratiche sviluppatesi dall’inizio del millennio. Alla base della ricerca c’è un’ipotesi forte: le esperienze analizzate dimostrano che, affinché i servizi pubblici possano superare la ristrettezza delle logiche di mercato, essi devono mettersi davvero al servizio del pubblico. La sfida cruciale sta dunque nel capire come la modernizzazione amministrativa e la partecipazione possano procedere insieme.

In Albania il crollo improvviso del regime comunista nel 1990 ha portato in brevissimo tempo alla completa destrutturazione del sistema collettivista costruito nell’arco di quarantacinque anni. I terreni agricoli vennero privatizzati concedendoli, frazionati in piccole proprietà, alle famiglie che li avevano lavorati nelle aziende statali. Questa scelta ha portato ad un collasso dell’economia agricola con il conseguente abbandono delle campagne e la crescente concentrazione della popolazione nei pochi centri capaci di dare una speranza di occupazione, anche se precaria: Tìrana, Durazzo, Valona, Fieri, Coriza.
Il collasso delle istituzioni statali ai diversi livelli e la scelta di un modello liberista indicato dai più importanti organismi internazionali ha determinato un modello di uso del suolo quasi totalmente privo di regole. Divenne pratica generalizzata edificare ovunque, a prescindere dalle leggi vigenti e dai vecchi strumenti urbanistici che durante il regime di Enver Hoxha coprivano l’intero territorio nazionale.
Questa forma di liberismo estremo ha prodotto, insieme a profondi e dolorosi squilibri, grandi trasformazioni e un forte sviluppo economico. La proiezione all’interno della società e del territorio albanese di inedite dinamiche di mercato ha causato una destrutturazione dei territori e delle città di fronte a cui le teorizzazioni e gli strumenti tecnici dell’urbanistica tradizionale hanno trovato grande difficoltà sia in termini di analisi che di proposta. In Albania stanno emergendo forme di organizzazione del territorio e delle città atipiche ma molto vitali che evocano, per alcuni aspetti, anche parti e relazioni degli elementi delle aree metropolitane europee.

The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) presents Actions: What You Can Do With the City, an exhibition of 99 actions that investigate how the design and experience of contemporary cities can be described and informed by four key human actions: gardening, recycling, playing, walking. These seemingly common activities are pushed beyond their usual definition, featuring in the exibition international contemporary architectural projects, design concepts, and research conveyed through a range of materials including architectural drawings, photographs, videos, publications, artefacts, and websites.
The 99 distinct actions presented include projects related to the production of food and urban agriculture; the planning and creation of public spaces to strengthen community interactions; the recycling of abandoned buildings for new purposes; the appropriation of urban sites into terrain for play, such as soccer, climbing, skateboarding, or parkour; the alternate use of roads for walking or rail lines as park space; the design of clothing to circumvent urban barriers against loitering or resting on benches; and many others.

Actions: What You Can Do With the City is accompanied by a book of the same title, which presents original research and writing that further examines the exhibition’s exploration. International in scope, the 30 essays are published for the first time and include personal observations by a range of activists alongside scholarly reflections on the positive impact these individual initiatives have on the city. The texts are interspersed with 34 specific actions drawn from the exhibition. Introductory essays by the editors Mirko Zardini and Giovanna Borasi provide historical perspective and establish the curatorial framework for the exhibition and publication.

After the Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA) in Montréal (Canada), from 26 November 2008 to 19 April 2009, the exhibition Actions: What You Can Do With the City travels to the Graham Foundation in Chicago (US) and is on show from 16 October 2009 to 13 March 2010.
The exhibition is accompanied by the website www.cca-actions.org, which presents a toolkit to inspire actions in the city. This databank of individual actions featured in the exhibition can be sorted and browsed in multiple ways (including by the type of tool employed in the action or the curatorial organisation of the exhibition). The website features photographs and video resources, and challenges users to respond by posting their own thoughts or initiatives on how to improve the city through individual action.

About the editors:

Giovanna Borasi is CCA Curator of Contemporary Architecture since 2005. She curated the exhibitions Some Ideas on Living in London and Tokyo by Stephen Taylor and Ryue Nishizawa (2008); 1973: Sorry, Out of Gas (with Mirko Zardini, 2007); and Environment: Approaches for Tomorrow on the work of Gilles Clément and Philippe Rahm (2006). Before joining the CCA, she collaborated on several exhibitions with Mirko Zardini including Asphalt, The Character of Cities at the Milan Triennale (2003). Borasi was an editor and writer for Lotus International and Navigator. She served as Assistant Editor for the book series Quaderni di Lotus, and was a member of the editorial staff of Lettera, the graphic design supplement to Abitare.

Mirko Zardini is the Director and Chief Curator of the CCA since 2005. At the CCA, he curated the exhibitions 1973: Sorry, Out of Gas (with Giovanna Borasi, 2007), Sense of the City (2005), Out of the Box: Price, Rossi, Stirling + Matta-Clark (2004), and has initiated a series of exhibitions developed with universities including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton University, and Columbia University. He has taught at prestigious architectural schools, including the Swiss Federal Polytechnic University in Zurich and Lausanne, Harvard University, and Princeton University, and is a former editor of Casabella magazine and Lotus International

Urban Concepts 1908/2008 Stadkonzepte 1908/2008

Multiple City reflects on current urban development against the background of urban concepts over the past 100 years. It is possible to trace the history of multiple manifestations, parallel strategies and diametrical developments. Urban concepts and urbanist discourse enjoy temporary booms, but leave behind enduring evidence. Today, a wide range of phenomena, interpretations and debates exist in conjunction. This publication documents 16 important topics of urban development on the basis of texts, up-to-date photographs and historical planning material. Well-known authors adopt standpoints on current urban developments in 32 essays. It becomes possible to experience urban development as an exciting discourse that involves us all.

The exhibition presents sixteen urbanistic terms, examining their transformation up to the present: From the 'garden city' at the beginning of the 20th century via the city landscape concepts of the early post-war period to today’s 'urban landscapes' and from the 'new towns' of the 1960s to the current establishments of cities in China and the United Arab Emirates; from the leading ideas of a 'mobile city' to the 'Telepolis' of a digital era and from the 'pleasure city' of a global consumer landscape to the strategy of branding, the city as a trademark. New phenomena appear which, at the same time, can be a product of traditional strategies. These phenomena are heterogeneous, there is neither one manifestation nor one strategy in dealing with the city of today: Multiple City.

The catalogue is published parallel to the exhibition Multiple City. Urban Concepts 1908/2008, Pinakothek der Moderne Munchen, 4th December 2008 - 1 March 2009.
Exhibition and publication are jointly produced by Architekturmuseum TU Munchen and Lehrstuhl fur Stadtebau und Regionalplanung TU Munchen. The exhibition as well as its accompanying catalogue are to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Department for Urban and Regional Planning at the TU München.

The Infrastructural City: Networked Ecologies in Los Angeles

Once the greatest American example of a modern city served by infrastructure, Los Angeles is now in perpetual crisis. Infrastructure has ceased to support its urban plans, subordinating architecture to its own purposes. This out-of-control but networked world is increasingly organized by flows of objects and information. Static structures avoid being superfluous by joining this system as temporary containers for people, objects, and capital. This provocative collection of photography, essays, and maps looks at infrastructure as a way of mapping our place in the city and affecting change through architecture.

"This book can only offer a partial insight into Los Angeles. In this immensely complex landscape, we cannot hope for a total approach the way that Banham did. Insted we set out to paint a picture of a particularly crucial aspect of the city, its dominance by an out-of-control infrastructure. To accomplish this, we can still turn to Banham's idea of ecologies as well as to the method of geographer Anton Wagner in his 1935 analysis of Los Angeles, a work profundly influential on Banham. (...) If we begin with Wagner's idea of looking at the city as landscape and Banham's notion of ecologies, we need to be more critical. Ecologies were still innocent in the 1960s. By now, today they are much more complicated. (...) We treat it in terms of networked ecologies, a series of codependent systems of environmental mitigation, land-use organization, communication and service delivery".

Based in New York, Varnelis has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Southern California, University of Pennsylvania, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has worked with the Center for Land Use Interpretation and is a co-founder of AUDC, which published Blue Monday: Absurd Realities and Natural Philosophies, 2007, and editor of Networked Publics and The Philip Johnson Tapes: Interviews by Robert A.M. Stern, 2008. He was president of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design in 2004 and 2005.

Un processo per la progettazione urbana

La progettazione urbana, nonostante le estese applicazioni e l'interesse della letteratura, fatica a essere considerata un campo disciplinare a sé stante. Più spesso è vista come l'interfaccia tra diverse discipline. È proprio questa sua imprecisa natura disciplinare che la caratterizza come il luogo dove, insieme alle collaborazioni tra discipline, se ne avvertono anche i conflitti in particolare quelli che sorgono tra gli esperti delle discipline più mature. Disciplina priva di uno statuto riconoscibile e difendibile da "invasioni di campo", è pacificamente colonizzata, invasa e occupata da urbanisti, architetti, ingegneri e architetti del paesaggio (oltre al ruolo che hanno nel processo di produzione dello spazio e degli obiettivi anche avvocati, banchieri e amministratori pubblici) ma è anche una disciplina in rapido sviluppo e un potente alleato delle pratiche di pianificazione urbanistica. Negli ultimi anni si assiste a una domanda crescente di capacità di governo del progetto urbano proveniente sia dal settore pubblico che da quello privato.
Per queste ragioni Urban Design risponde al bisogno di un supporto teorico e metodologico che consenta di inquadrare questa attività fornendo la traccia di un metodo chiaro, utilizzabile da studenti, professionisti e funzionari pubblici, che proponga linee guida sperimentate e praticabili. Il libro - con testo in italiano e inglese - ha l’obiettivo di presentare l’attività della progettazione urbana attraverso la definizione e la descrizione di un processo. Quello che si propone è un cosiddetto "modello di processo" adattato al progetto urbano, utilizzabile nei concorsi di progettazione, nello svolgimento di incarichi diretti, nei workshop. Il processo di progettazione proposto in Urban Design è articolato in nove fasi, o moduli, nelle quali si articolano anche i capitoli del libro. Per ciascuna fase il testo fornisce descrizioni, principi, esempi e riferimenti a casi nazionali e internazionali ed un'ampia bibliografia di riferimento.

The art of designing both unites and divides landscape architecture and architecture. Despite having a long tradition, landscape architecture has lacked a concise presentation of the fundamental principles underlying its design and planning concepts. This book has evolved out of more than twenty years of teaching experience. The authors distinguish between the variable factors such as climate, growth of vegetation etc., and the more abstract element of design. They describe the ideal design components and demonstrate the extent to which natural features such as surfaces, spaces, paths, borders, hard and soft materials shape the designs. The book reveals how concepts such as 'order' and 'chaos', way and goal, intention and reaction form the basis for landscape design, just as they do in architecture.

“What resources are available for designing open spaces? How is it possible to exchange descriptions and concepts dealing with this? How can social and perceptual aspects be included and how can they be taken into account by the design process? What part is played by conditions deriving from nature? And what is more: how are locations and spaces created in the open air, how are paths routed and boundaries set, how are hard and soft materials used? This book identifies and analyses the elements that come together to create landscape architecture. Hans Loidl taught landscape architecture at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna, from 1976-1984. From 1982 he has been Professor of Landscape Architecture at the Technische Universität Berlin, specializing in project planning and design. From 1984 he has headed his own landscape architecture studio in Berlin with numerous realized projects, publication, expert reports, juries and lectures.

Stefan Bernard works as a landscape architect and graphic designer. He is partner in the b+m+s Landschaftsarchitekten from 2001.

Il Quartiere nella Città Contemporanea

Periferie deprivate e senza risorse, in cui finiscono per trovarsi confinati coloro che sono esclusi dalle opportunità di mobilità fisica e sociale. Nuovi quartieri firmati da architetti di grido, simboli della rinnovata importanza delle città nell’economia globale. Ambiti locali dove si sviluppano partecipazione e impegno civile, ma anche 'quartieri fortezza' in cui rinchiudersi alla ricerca di sicurezza e omogeneità sociale. Più semplicemente, quartieri 'di tutti giorni' in cui abitano individui e famiglie che cercano di far fronte alla crescente complessità di gestione spazio-temporale delle relazioni e delle attività a livello metropolitano.
Ripercorrendo il dibattito classico, ma anche ricorrendo ai più recenti contributi internazionali, il libro offre a studenti di sociologia, delle discipline urbanistiche e architettoniche e a chi opera in ambito politico e sociale, una rigorosa ma agevole introduzione ai principali temi di teoria e ricerca sul quartiere. Oggetto solo apparentemente intuitivo e scontato, il quartiere si rivela nel corso dei capitoli un filone di analisi di grande rilevanza e attualità, che chiama in causa questioni centrali per comprendere le trasformazioni dell’esperienza urbana e dell’organizzazione della città contemporanea.
