CONFERENCE THEME
The economic crisis, the changes in city life, the diffused demand for urban quality and the various issues from different social groups pose several challenges to urban government among which housing welfare has gained a prominent position all over Europe. In Milano the recent town planning debate was an important occasion to raise questions about the supply of land and funding for non market housing, the sustainability and the economic drivers and non profit entrepreneurs, the search for an available social mixitè in neighbourhoods.
The conference intends to tackle these issues by presenting some experiences in major countries and discussing them in the Italian context with a panel of planners involved both in administrative and academic contexts.
The Conference aims to work on the relationship between planning and housing, two intimately linked social activities, but often researched on separate scholarly platforms. In addition to that, the conference theme claims that housing is a matter of welfare and consequently urban policies and plans have to offer feasible solutions to its urgency.

The ARCHIP Bridging Prague Summer Workshop is a three-week intensive study and life experience, based in Prague, Czech Republic. “Golden Prague” has been described as “the most beautiful city in Europe” and almost every architectural expression is well represented here- Gothic, Romanesque, Neo-Classical, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Functionalist and Modern. Prague’s historic core, fundamentally unchanged since the 14th century, has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1992.

WORKSHOP THEME
Participants will propose architecture and planning urban interventions onto the iconic Vltava riverbank, one of the richest historic architectural environments in Central Europe. Through urban analysis of existing conditions and the context, students will propose an appropriate contemporary intervention(s) responding to scale, massing, materials and the existing cultural context of Prague.

The workshop will start with an intensive historical and contextual site analysis, led by respected Czech historians, urban planners and architects. At the end of the first week, participants will choose a specific site and will develop a personal intervention, which could be architectural, site- or landscape-based.
There will be a guided component of the program, where students will study other iconic urban, architectural and historic sites in Prague.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
1. to encourage critical analysis od traditional European urbanism and architecture and the implications and effects of modern interventions;
2. to work in a multi-disciplinary context to encourage a holistic approach to architecture, planning, landscape architecture and urbanism;
3. to provide "real world" situations for the address of the Vltava River banks, with an eye to the long-term planning goals for the city to better address use of public space and pedestrian mobility along the river.

Maximum of fifteen (15) participants. All architecture, planning or landscape architecture students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to an accredited program are eligible to apply. Students will be accepted first on the basis of merit and then on a first-come, first-served basis.

CHARTER OF PUBLIC SPACE

The draft Charter of Public Space, a planned output of the Biennial of Public Space 2013, has been placed on the Biennial’s website for downloading and editing. All interested Planum readers are invited to post specific proposals to improve the existing text. Contributions deemed worthy will be used to prepare a new draft to be submitted to a real-time editing workshop to be held on Friday 17 May at the Biennal’s concluding event in Rome.
In partnership with UN-HABITAT, the Charter will travel to a number of international venues, including the Stockholm “Future of Places” international conferences, the 2014 World Urban Forum and the 2015 Biennial, in order to finalize a normative contribution on public space to the Habitat III Conference in 2016.

La “Carta dello Spazio Pubblico” e’ un progetto lanciato nel 2011 dalla prima Biennale dello Spazio Pubblico. Questo documento è il risultato di un processo di redazione impostato da un lato coinvolgendo i principali partner nazionali ed internazionali della Biennale, e successivamente aperto a tutti via web, dall’altro analizzando riferimenti nazionali ed internazionali, con particolare riferimento alla Convenzione Europea per il Paesaggio.
E' possibile scaricare e modificare la 'Carta dello Spazio Pubblico' sul sito della Biennale. Tutti i lettori di Planum interessati all'iniziativa possono lasciare proposte per migliorare ed arrichhire il testo della 'Carta'. I commenti ritenuti accettabili saranno utilizzati per preparare un nuovo documento che sarà oggetto di ulteriori modifiche in occasione di un workshop che si terrà Venerdì 17 Maggio durante l'evento conclusivo della Biennale a Roma.
Dopo la sua adozione essa verrà ulteriormente arricchita da numerose revisioni di carattere internazionale, onde costituire un contributo alla Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite Habitat III in programma nel 2016 a Istanbul.

THE CONFERENCE
The Smart City Event is a 2-day conference which provides the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in the world of sustainable innovation. Hear from city and corporate leaders who will share their experiences with implementing successful Smart projects. You can learn about smart grids, big data, lighting, e-mobility, sustainable building, e-health, and more. There will be representatives from more than 15 EU cities to come share their experiences.

• Overview of the most innovative examples of successful smart projects within Europe;
• Vision of the overall concept of Smart Cities;
• Options and financial support from the European Commission to realize smart projects;

• Boat tour with dinner on the canals of Amsterdam.
Day 2
• Excursions: visits to various locations in and around Amsterdam where you can view smart city projects in action;
• Smart City of New Songdo;
• How do you create successful smart city projects with a diversity of stakeholders?;
• The benefits of making digital and emerging technologies available to all citizens, businesses and • sectors in the city;
• How do we engage citizens in smart city projects?;
• In small groups, you will share knowledge and experiences, generate solutions and discover new insights.

EXCURSIONS
Excursion 1 | Stadium, skyboxes and the technical areas
Excursion to the Amsterdam ArenA: you’ll have a look in the ‘energy-kitchen’ of the Ajax-stadium, which has a goal of becoming climate neutral in 2015. The tour will include the stadium, skybox and technical areas. Nuon will give an explanation about the city heating system.
Excursion 2 | Innovation Hall in NEMO
Besides visiting the several interactive exhibitions and demonstrations of Smart Light, Power Matcher and Electric Mobility in NEMO participants will get the opportunity to participate in an exciting participatory activity. Students from Amsterdam will be mixing with professionals in order to play a discussion game on the topic of smart cities and sustainability.
Excursion 3 | Smart Grid Projects of Liander.
The first neighborhood in Europe were 35.000 people use smart grids.

The Summer School on Urban Studies for Smart City (To_uS) is promoted by the City of Torino and the Politecnico of Torino. Its aim is to provide high level education to PhD students interested in understanding how and to what extent our cities are changing, following – or contrasting – the path of the so-called “smart cities revolution”.

SUMMER SCHOOL
The To_uS Summer School programme will explore links of the smart city model with other powerful visions of cities in transformation, such as:
• the Sustainable City, as a model of good practices leading towards a brighter and greener common future;
• the Slow City, as opposed to a too fast development process, in which the core meaning of shared spaces and common futures seems to be lost;
• the Shrinking City, in which the need to control soil consumption and the redefinition of urbanization processes in industrialized countries promote strategies of adaptation.
Such visions and ideas will be confronted also with specific models and approaches to address the transformation of urban areas, e.g the Senseable City (as developed by MIT).
Academics and experts in different fields, including planners, evaluators, urban sociologists, urban geographers, urban designers, political scientists, urban managers, will contribute to the subject, providing a plural perspective on the smart cities debate.

The Summer School courses will ensure 45 hours of lecturing for PhD. Credits will be accounted by each belonging affiliation.
The application will be assessed by the Organization Committee by 30.06.2013 and the 30 selected candidates will be informed and be able to organize their staying in Torino.

TEMA
L’obiettivo centrale di questo primo forum cittadino sulle Smart Cities, organizzato e promosso dal Comune di Milano e da Camera di Commercio, è quello di coinvolgere i principali attori dello sviluppo della città nella realizzazione della Strategia di “Milano Smart City”.
A livello internazionale, la Città di Milano è già membro attivo delle maggiori reti europee e mondiali che oggi si occupano di Smart Cities. A livello locale, Comune e Camera di Commercio sono impegnati nella costruzione di partenariati stabili tra realtà diverse, nel campo della ricerca e dell’innovazione sociale, del business e della finanza.

Nei prossimi mesi verrà avviato un percorso di consultazione che metta in rete le istituzioni, i privati, le università e le associazioni, attraverso la creazione di gruppi di lavoro tematici corrispondenti ai sei pilastri delle 'Smart Cities' (classificazione dell'università di Vienna):
1. Smart Economy
2. Smart Living
3. Smart Environment
4. Smart Mobility
5. Smart People
6. Smart Governance.
Questo primo Public Hearing vuole portare nuove idee a questo processo, alimentando e rafforzando il dibattito pubblico sul significato, oltre gli slogan, della Città Intelligente.

Changing cities: Perspectives in urban research and new approaches to urban planning, policy and design for an equal and sustainable city.

CONTEXT OF THE RESEARCH ACTIVITY
The PhD course is aimed at exploring the significance and impact of urban changes, with specific attention to the transition towards new more sustainable and equal modes of urban development, as well as to pro-active innovation in planning practices, which expand traditional urban studies, urban design and policy approaches.
The integration between different spheres of research, theory and practice as well as innovative planning practices that combine urban design and policy design are promoting as an approach of the research projects involved in the PhD program.

The overall Conference theme is territorialisation, to be understood as a process which links physical, socio-economic and cultural place-based conditions for sustainable development, encompassing sense-making and giving meaning to places through cultural practices, place identities, narratives, values and sense of place. The conference theme cobines regional development with the main topics of the Cost Action 'Investigating Cultural Sustainability.

THEME
The conference theme combines regional development with the main topics of the Cost Action “Investigating Cultural Sustainability”.
This combination leads to four thematic lines, that will be explored in the key note sessions:
1. Memory, identity and places;
2. The role of culture in place- framing and making;
3. Urban and regional planning: cultures and practices;
4. Territorialisation: challenges for policies.
These thematic lines will also be reflected in the Parallel sessions, as they deal with different COST book projects. International scholars and experts will be invited as key-note speakers either in Plenaries or to contribute to the Parallel Sessions’ discussion on the topics of the work-in-progress COST books.

SEZIONI DEL CONCORSO
Per iniziativa dell’INU Istituto Nazionale di Urbanistica e di INU Edizioni è bandito il Premio INU Letteratura Urbanistica 2013 - II Edizione, per promuovere la cultura urbanistica e divulgare le attività teoriche e di ricerca.
Il premio verrà assegnato ad opere di letteratura urbanistica secondo le modalità descritte nel Regolamento (Si veda il documento allegato).

Il Premio è dedicato alle pubblicazioni di settore ed è organizzato nelle seguenti Sezioni:
• Monografie;
• Contributo in libro collettaneo;
• Articolo di rivista;
• Inedito;
• Nuovi linguaggi multimediali;
Le opere devono pervenire entro il 30 giugno 2013.

ESITI
Le opere in concorso verranno selezionate dal comitato scientifico del premio e votate dalla giuria composta da tutti gli iscritti INU che decreterà i vincitori.
I vincitori avranno un ampio spazio di promozione delle proprie opere nell’ambito della giornata della letteratura urbanistica e sul sito dell’INU. Il vincitore della sezione inediti avrà la propria opera pubblicata dalla INU Edizioni.

MAIN THEME
The seminar is aimed at reflecting about contemporary changing features of “public” spaces and public services in the urban environment. We need to find new paradigms for the interpretation of the rise of spaces (open spaces and built environment) which are no longer clearly definable as “public”, related to retail, cultural or leisure activities, workplaces, coffee houses, nodes of related public transport. Reasoning about their status, accessibility in space, in time and in relation to ICTs, about mixed uses and users and about the disappearance of the traditional functionalist divisions between housing, work and leisure time is necessary to change our approach as planners and designers and to update the traditional governance structures.

TEMA
Costruire condizioni perchè le qualità della città siano diffuse e presenti anche in contesti distanti dal suo centro è un obiettivo ambizioso.
Produrre urbanità significa moltiplicare le condizioni in cui i cittadini possono accedere a benefici e servizi che la città può offrire, accrescere la capacità di aspirare, supportare le condizioni a che cittadinanza e diritti siano praticate. Costruire urbanità richiede di combinare cose ed usi diversi, animare lo spazio di giorno senza dimenticare la notte, confrontarsi con le differenze e le criticità che derivano dallo stare insieme e creare le condizioni perchè sia possibile stare insieme tra differenti, dare ricovero insieme a volpi e galline...

Il riuso degli spazi racchiuso entro le mura dell'ospedale psichiatrico Paolo Pini a Milano ha ridefinito il senso, riorganizzato gli usi e gli spazi. Oggi la piazza e gli orti dell'ex ospedale psichiatrico sono piazza e orti della città, ma sempre più anche piazza e orti del quartiere Comasina. A distanza di anni, la relazione tra i diversi luoghi e le diverse persone che abitano e frequentano questa parte di città è divenuta una relazione di interdipendenza, di connessioni strette e generative di nuove idee e nuovi progetti.
A partire da una ricerca e da alcune esperienze la giornata di studio si presenta come un'occasione per discutere insieme sulla necessità di una visione d'insieme e non settoriale dei fattori e delle condizioni che consentono di fare città e società. Tre città - Torino, Milano e Trieste - alimenteranno con le loro esperienze la discussione.

Jacques Donzelot, tra i più importanti sociologi francesi contemporanei e attento studioso della città, terrà una lezione di apertura a partire dalle sue ricerche sulle trasformazioni della società urbana e sulle politiche sperimentate per la riqualificazione delle periferie delle città francesi.

Urbanism after urbanism is the theme of the 7th edition of the U&U International PhD Seminar that will be held at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris-Malaquais, under the scientific direction of the Laboratory of Infrastructure and Architecture Planning (LIAT) in October 2013.

MAIN & SPECIFIC THEMES
The 2013 program '’Urbanism after urbanism’’ is the reinvention of the urban planning while dominating worldwide urbanism discards from late capitalism.
Three major issues, interrelated or interdependent, build the approach this year:
1. The first is "condition of product" that characterizes the current urban projects, determined as they are by the generic outcomes of urban marketing ("how to increase the attractiveness of the city"). This question rises from the fact that territories are emerging as goods or products to be sold, promoted and consumed and on the end similar to other human productions.
2. The second questions enquiries the dematerialization of the city caused by the development of self-phones and other lines of tablet computers that deliver real-time data and provide, as regards the displacements, a different perception and organization of daily life;
3. The third approach makes to think on the loss of the functional and administrative value of "the city" in favor of urban areas, and "communities" of all kinds. This question interrogates the future of urban planning when the city becomes a symbolic entity in the market economy.

CALL FOR PAPERS
This threefold questioning raised above calls for presentations that can take various forms, investigation into historical methods of urban analysis or investigation in terms of project and critical theory.
The seminar invites full papers that present a coherent piece of research or dissertation chapter, as well as short papers that address methodology, research question or articulate a starting point for PhD research. Full papers (4000-8000 words) will be organized in thematic sessions. Short papers (2000-2500 words) will be organized in thematic workshops. A selection of seminar contributions will be published.

The International Contemporary Urban Issues Conference is aiming at fostering discussions of theory and research on urban issues by DAKAM. Focusing on a multidimensional urban phenomenon, this international conference aims to deepen the understanding of informality by opening it to discussion with contributions from various disciplines like architecture, urban planning, sociology, history, economy and anthropology.

THE THEME
Now, it is widely accepted that informal way of living is a necessity for the urban poor as a survival strategy. Hence, informal work and housing constitute a significant proportion of urban economies and policies.
Today, the boundary between the formal and informal is blurred more than before since most urbanites, including the middle classes, experience both formal and informal encounters in their everyday life. Consequently, contemporary informality affects not just a marginal segment of the society but a majority of people living in urban space.

THE AIM
DAKAM’s CUI 2013 symposium offers a platform for specialists and young academics to interact and share knowledge with non-governmental organizations, businesses and policy makers, as well as fellow researchers. These academic activities serve to bring the gap between research and practice, expanding the opportunities for positive cross-sectoral collaborations in response to the challenging realities of cities in the 21st century.

CALL FOR PAPERS
There are three participation categories:
1. In-person participation:
Regular conference presentation, the participants attend personally.
2. Virtual presentation:
If you are unable to attend the conference in-person you can submit a PowerPoint presentation with voice-over (optional) or a video before the conference.
3. Poster presentation:
If you are unable to attend the conference in-person your poster will be exhibited in the exhibition hall of the conference venue during the conference.

Il 19 marzo si svolgerà a Firenze la I giornata di metodologia della ricerca per i corsi di dottorato dedicata al Case Study e alla Ricerca comparativa. Saranno presenti professori, dottorandi e ricercatori di diverse sedi universitarie italiane. L’evento è immaginato come un workshop in cui si alternano interventi dedicati e panel, forum e tavoli di discussione.

LA GIORNATA
La I° giornata di metodologia della ricerca offre l’opportunità di un confronto tra dottorandi, giovani ricercatori del terzo ciclo di formazione e docenti dei collegi di dottorato in urbanistica, pianificazione e politiche urbane, che negli ultimi anni hanno contribuito con vari ruoli alla formazione dei dottori di ricerca italiani.
L’incontro nasce a valle dei ragionamenti maturati nell’ambito della Rete Interdottorato in Urbanistica e Pianificazione Territoriale e tenta di rispondere all’esigenza di una riflessione comune anche con riferimento al contesto interazionale.
L’intera giornata sarà dedicata alla discussione di due temi centrali: Case Study e ricerca comparativa. I due approcci saranno indagati e messi a confronto con il contributo di dottorandi, docenti dei collegi e ospiti di università straniere.

IL BLOG
Le pagine del blog sono aperte ai commenti di tutti e in particolare a quelli dei dottorandi.
La giornata sulla metodologia è dedicata ad affrontare i dubbi e le domande di chi comincia un percorso di ricerca e si confronta con metodologie, obiettivi e prodotti differenti.
A tal fine sono state aperte tre pagine di discussione: una sul Case Study; una sulla ricerca comparativa; una dedicata all’archivio di studi di caso o esempi di ricerche comparative.
Potete contribuire in modi diversi e in tutte le sezioni, lasciando commenti, suggerimenti bibliografici, caricare materiali in pdf e potete infine scrivere nella lingua che preferite.
Le domande che lascerete nelle diverse sezioni del blog saranno lette e commentate dai relatori durante i lavori della conferenza.

I cambiamenti climatici sono stati in questi anni al centro dell’attenzione scientifica e mediatica per il crescente impatto di fenomeni meteorologici estremi in diverse aree del globo, e per l’evidenza empirica dei danni economici, sociali e ambientali provocati dal riscaldamento globale che potranno accelerarsi in futuro.

TEMA
Il tema dell’adattamento al cambiamento climatico è stato, fino ad oggi, declinato nel quadro internazionale prevalentemente in relazione alla minaccia alle attività agricole, alle risorse idriche, alle condizioni sanitarie, al turismo, alle coste più esposte al possibile innalzamento del livello dei mari e all’intrusione salina.
In questa prospettiva ha assunto grande importanza lo studio degli impatti (soprattutto cumulativi) sul ciclo idrogeologico e sulla risorsa idrica in generale, sul mare, ma anche sugli ecosistemi marini, oltre che sul rapporto con le zone costiere, sull'agricoltura e le sue prospettive in termini alimentari ed energetici, su boschi e foreste, per varie zone climatiche (montagna, pianura, litorali), sui cicli di siccità, i processi di desertificazione, fino alla produzione energetica.

OBIETTIVI
La conferenza si rivolge a policy maker (città e reti di città) e a centri di ricerca pubblici (università e Enti) e privati impegnate nello studio e nella sperimentazione di soluzioni, tecniche e policy design per l’adattamento.
Gli obiettivi dell’appuntamento sono:
1. Individuare lo stato dell’arte della ricerca e della sperimentazione sull’adattamento delle città e dei territori al cambiamento climatico, oltre che di mettere a confronto le diverse realtà, casi e esperienze europee e statunitensi;
2. Individuare temi e proposte operative per il Piano nazionale di adattamento ai cambiamenti climatici del Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare, sostenitore dell’iniziativa.

ORGANIZZAZIONE
La conferenza è articolata in due giornate:
23 Maggio | la prima dedicata a casi studio, reti di città ed esperienze istituzionali, con un confronto tra Europa e Stati Uniti;
24 Maggio | la seconda giornata è dedicata ad un workshop sulla ricerca sull’adattamento ai cambiamenti climatici con riferimento alla città e al territorio.

La Biennale dello Spazio Pubblico

La Casa dell’Architettura in collaborazione con la Biennale dello Spazio Pubblico vuole raccogliere idee e progetti innovativi che riflettano sul tema dello spazio pubblico nella città contemporanea offrendo spunti originali per un rinnovamento dello sguardo sui problemi a esso connessi.

Obiettivo principale è la realizzazione di un ciclo di mostre, accompagnato da discussioni pubbliche sul tema a partire da materiali elaborati da studi di architettura, artisti, gruppi di ricerca interdisciplinari e diversamente contaminati in grado di riassumere, in elaborati di diversa natura (supporti materiali e immateriali: foto, progetti, plastici, oggetti, video), gli spunti di riflessione sul tema.

Tra le proposte pervenute ne saranno selezionate 5 e i gruppi proponenti saranno invitati ad esporre i materiali illustrati nel progetto.
La proposta ritenuta più interessante inaugurerà il ciclo di mostre e i proponenti saranno chiamati a realizzare il progetto di allestimento che, successivamente, sarà riutilizzato anche per le mostre seguenti.

Esso si rivolge a studiosi in possesso del titolo di dottore di ricerca conseguito dopo il 31/10/2006 e stabilmente impegnati all’estero da almeno un triennio in attività didattica o di ricerca presso qualificate istituzioni universitarie o di ricerca.

DOMANDE DI PARTECIPAZIONE
Le domande di partecipazione al bando dovranno essere compilate direttamente dagli interessati entro le ore 24:00 del 3 Marzo.
Le domande dovranno essere presentate esclusivamente per via telematica, utilizzando l'apposito sito web MIUR-CINECA.
La domanda deve contenere:
• CV dell'interessato;
• Elenco delle pubblicazioni scientifiche e allegata una pubblicazione realizzata nell'ultimo triennio;
• Autocertificazione di stabile permanenza all'estero;

SELEZIONE DELLE PROPOSTE
La selezione delle proposte è affidata ad un Comitato composto dal Presidente della Conferenza dei Rettori delle Università Italiane e da quattro studiosi di alta qualificazione scientifica in ambito internazionale, nominati dal Ministro, con il compito di esprimere motivati pareri sulla qualificazione scientifica dei candidati e sulla valenza scientifica dei progetti di ricerca. Il Comitato si avvale ai fini della valutazione delle candidature di esperti, italiani o stranieri di alta qualificazione. Al termine della fase di valutazione il Comitato ordina, secondo liste di priorità tra le diverse macroaree, tutte.

THEME OF THE CONFERENCE
This conference aims at exploring the multiple, innovative ways which are and can be used to describe and analyze contemporary cities, with peculiar attention granted to the role of new media (web 3.0, geo-social networks, etc…). These virtual environments, in fact, generate collective, self-organized and informal sources of knowledge, which cover international urban networks and highly impact on our understanding of urban spatiality in the 21st century. The different languages used to describe cities have become, in this perspective, interpretive instruments, meta-projectual tools and, at the same time, vehicles to share images of urban landscapes.
The main questions we would like to consider in this international conference are: How can we give visibility to the new forms of interactions between citizens and urban spaces? How do we interpret the extensive quantity of random data coming from the virtual traces we leave on a daily basis through cities? How can we create a dialogue between opposed physical and geographical identities belonging to the same metropolitan region?
This event will allow us to show samples of how the major contemporary cities are studied, analyzed and represented, through a highly interdisciplinary perspective, fostering the dialogue between geography, architecture, spatial semiotics and urban studies.

SESSIONS
1. Representation and Perceptions of the Changing City
Rethinking the relationship between perception and representation can mean re-examine the fundamentals that bind urban landscapes with the universe of images created to interpret, understand, communicate cities.
2. Visualizing the Past, Imagining the Future
Try to interpret the urban phenomenon means, first of all, facing with the times of the past and projections of the future.
3. ICT: Sharing Visions of the City
This theme explores the relationship and role that digital media can have in the representation and experience of urban spaces and places.
4. New Urban Metaphors
As pointed out by some of the most interesting contemporary studies define urban complexity and make it visible and clear means trying new epistemological strategies.

THEME OF THE CONFERENCE
The hypothesis that PICS (Public Identity and Common Space) intends to verify is that the quality of living in public housing neighbourhoods is a urgent core theme of reflection for designing the contemporary city, and that the design of open space may be a fertile point of operative observation. Regenerating open spaces may be the first step in a recovery strategy that integrates the physical, spatial, and environmental components with social and behavioural ones.
Aim of the conference is to collect and recount situations, projects and procedures for guiding designers, technicians, officials and residents, in order to improve the liveability of residential peripheries through actions on open spaces.

On June 24-26th, 2013 in Stockholm, Placemaking leaders from around the world will gather together with UN officials, representatives from international government agencies, NGOs, designers, change agents, mayors, local politicians, and other place-centered actors for The Future of Places, the first of three linked conferences that will develop a ‘Future of Places Declaration’ to influence the discussion at the Habitat III gathering in 2016.

CONFERENCE THEME
The Future of Places forum will highlight how and why cities need to embrace a people centered approach in order to achieve positive urbanization and not fall victim to the negative attributes of urbanization.
The first conference will focus on defining the urgency, the problems and the potential of ‘places’ in the coming years – both in the developing and the developed world. Will be introduced best practices and current methods for the further progression of ‘places’, and detailed analyses of the economic and social value of placemaking.

SPECIFIC THEMES
Three ‘strategic themes’ have been defined for prompting bureaucratic innovation:
1. Governance of Place;
2. Place Capital;
3. Healthy Communities.

Due anni dopo, ancora a Roma. Prosegue il percorso della Biennale dello spazio pubblico che, giunta alla seconda edizione, terrà il suo evento conclusivo nella capitale dal 16 al 19 maggio.

Alla Casa dell'architettura di piazza Manfredo Fanti e nei locali della Facoltà di architettura dell'Università di Roma Tre (all'ex Mattatoio) si incontreranno e parteciperanno alla mostra e ai workshop progettisti, amministratori, docenti, studiosi italiani e stranieri, studenti ma soprattutto semplici cittadini desiderosi di apprendere i metodi e le possibilità per creare o riqualificare gli spazi urbani di tutti, le strade, le piazze, i parchi e i luoghi di incontro che spesso le amministrazioni pubbliche, a causa delle ristrettezze finanziarie, non riescono a valorizzare e manutenere nel modo giusto.

La Biennale dello spazio pubblico sarà all'insegna dell'incontro, del dialogo e della condivisione, e affronterà tra gli altri temi all'ordine del giorno come i programmi di rigenerazione urbana, il partenariato pubblico - privato, la valorizzazione del patrimonio pubblico dismesso, l'accessibilità e la sicurezza per figure deboli come i bambini, gli anziani e i disabili che saranno protagonisti di eventi creativi.

Uno slogan caratterizza questa edizione: "Prove di città", con il quale si vuole sottolineare da un lato la necessità di ripristinare, a fronte di fenomeni di incontrollata dispersione urbana, i valori propri della città e dall'altro affermare la necessità di fornire strumenti operativi concreti per la rigenerazione urbana.

Un giro a tappe nei Comuni che organizzano laboratori su diversi temi che saranno oggetto di confronto nelle giornate conclusive di maggio: cura e gestione, inclusione, accessibilità e sicurezza, gli spazi pubblici nei centri storici, valorizzazione del patrimonio dismesso, spazi pubblici e città diffusa.

I terremoti, così come le alluvioni, i cicloni e tutti i disastri naturali cancellano, trasformano, pietrificano intere parti di territorio privandoli di spazi e memorie necessari alla vita dei luoghi.
In tale contesto il call che si intende sottoporre è rivolto a studiosi, curiosi, tecnici, amministratori di diverse aree disciplinari che intendono presentare uno specifico sguardo rispetto ai luoghi interessati da ricostruzioni post-disastro particolarmente attente agli spazi pubblici.

THA AIM OF THE SUMMIT

"Olympic Legacies International Conference" will be held at the University of East London at the Docklands Campus.

CONFERENCE THEMES
In the recent period the urban transformation achieved by hosting the Olympics has become synonymous with the language of ‘legacy’. Now forming part of the Olympic Charter and an essential element of any city’s bid for hosting the Olympic Games, ‘legacy’ refers to the (positive) economic, cultural, environmental and social impacts that arise and continue to unfold long after the games are over. In London, one key legacy promise was the regeneration of the city’s East End.

Il tema della trasformazione delle città coinvolge le politiche urbane generali, così come la pluralità di modi e tempi di vita diffusi nel territorio. Negli ultimi anni va riaffermandosi con forza la necessità di favorire nuovi processi partecipativi e decisionali. A livello internazionale di sviluppa la rete dei Living Lab, mentre in Italia strutture come gli Urban Center (UC) o "Case della Città" rappresentano luoghi e strumenti per favorire la costruzione di politiche urbane condivise.

Working Group on Transformation in the World System

The working group “Transformations in the World System – Comparative Studies of Development” launches the workshop “The Rise of New Periphery in the World”.
The workshop will be held in Kiev on September 19-21, 2013 and hosted by the State University (Faculty of Sociology). The working languages are English and French, according to the statute of EADI.

GENERAL THEME
The concepts of periphery and core (centre) have been the key elements of the world-system analysis and development studies since the mid-20th century when this discipline of social sciences has emerged. Apparently, periphery and core have been performed and co-evolved as opposites undistinguishable from each other.
At present, when one can see the rise and expansion of zones falling almost completely out of the global integration process widely accepted concepts of development should be reconsidered.
The process of globalisation put the following questions: can the world core exist without periphery, and if yes, to what extent? Does non-inclusion into the global financial-commercial and economic system mean complete detachment from the world periphery? Can periphery extend independently from the global commercial and financial sub-systems? Where does the economic growth of failed and semi-failed states really arrive at? What are the social-economic and political factors favourable to self-exclusion (self-expulsion) of some countries from the world system?

SPECIFIC THEMES
The focus of the working group will be on the special case of East European and the CIS countries. The propose is to discuss the following issues:
• Post-Soviet economic system versus free/social market economy;
• Privatisation of the state versus privatisation of enterprises;
• Integration into the global market and survival of the old (non-market, statist and protectionist) economic system;
• Internal periphery: preconditions and prospects of its emergence and evolution; poverty and exclusion from social and economic development;
• Corruption as a characteristic feature of post-Soviet societies and patrimonial, client statehood;
• Anti-developmental state; de-institutionalisation of the state (destruction of political and legal institutions);
• Political revolutions without social transformations: a vicious circle of stagnation and revolts;
• Problem of social agents of modernisation: where and which are the social strata capable to initiate and maintain development?

The RC21 Conference 2013 will take place in Berlin, Germany, from August 29th to August 31st and is hosted by the Department of Urban and Regional Sociology at the Institute of Social Sciences and the Georg Simmel Center for Metropolitan Research at Humboldt University, in collaboration with the Free University and the Center for Metropolitan Studies at the Technical University.

CONFERENCE THEME
Thinking about resourceful cities, there are two levels of analyses that we consider to be central for this conference:
1. On the one hand, there is the visible structure of the city. This includes urban institutions, how they differ spatially and provide different qualities of resources to urban residents depending on the stratification of places within and between cities. Here, questions raise as to how urban inequalities in outcomes are linked to inequalities in accessing resources, depending on spatial segregation, or about social mix. It also points to themes of mobilities and resources and questions of environmental justice that are linked to the natural resources within cities and the differences here between cities and hinterlands.
2. On the other hand, there is a social infrastructure to the city, which is relatively invisible, either because it is taken for granted and hence overlooked, or it is ignored and rejected for its informality and marginality. The social infrastructure results from people going about living urban lives, and doing so with and in conflict with others, doing the city, or creating cityness.
The conference aims to cover both of these analytical lenses in its program.

CONFERENCE THEME
During the second half of the twentieth century the towns and cities of Britain were transformed more extensively than at any period since the industrial revolution. Millions of people were moved from the centre of cities to new urban settlements; whole manufacturing industries and their associated communities and cultures were swept away in a matter of decades; and the steady influx of peoples from the old empire and Europe created new community formations and ultimately a multicultural Britain which was also overwhelmingly urban. Britain’s towns and cities today are barely recognisable from the drab and damaged places that emerged from the Second World War.

THE AIM
The purpose of this conference is to bring together not only different types of historian – social, cultural, economic, urban, planning – around this subject but also others who have a direct interest in it: conservationists, policymakers, journalists and others. One of the purposes of the conference is to create a network of scholars and practitioners on post-war urban Britain.

URBANISM FOR A DIFFERENT KIND OF GROWTH
CONFLICTS IN DEVELOPMENT, OVERCOMUNG THE RECESSION
AND CONTEMPORARY LAND-USE PLANNING

During the deepest and most painful economic and social crises, the human and physical landscape and changes in its use have assumed a central role in the development process, from the Keynesian policies to rekindle the US economy after the great depression of 1929 to the reconstruction and growth of the urban districts that have been a cornerstone of Italy’s post‐war economic boom. These phenomena have often led to unbalanced growth. In many cases, it has been at the expense of the territory and its values, producing effects that have sometimes proved difficult to reverse, driven by economic and political interests, monopolies and power relationships that have impoverished the territory. At the same time, town planners have been unable to integrate resources in a meaningful way.

History confirms the central importance of the built environment as a driver of growth, wealth‐creation and new opportunity. But the problem today is the need to support forms of local development through plans and projects that are sensitive to the interdependence between economic growth, environmental sustainability and social equity: in other words, between the economy, space and society.
Our task now is to understand what growth means for the contemporary territory, and how it should be pursued within a development framework that is not necessarily linked to the production‐consumption cycle and that is not viewed solely in quantitative and economic terms. It is a challenge that requires a multidisciplinary approach. This must involve restructuring the urban and social fabric, embracing different lifestyles and forms of settlement and production, with sensitivity and consideration to theoretical and practical perspectives geared to “prosperity without growth”.

With the current global economic crisis, the subject of different types of growth is back on the agenda. This calls for a keen awareness of the need for sustainability and fairness. Local development becomes a potential source of employment and a way to kick‐start the economy, provided that common values are safeguarded – in particular, cultural and environmental heritage, scarce or non‐reproducible resources, and shared values enshrined in the policies for developing the built environment.
Town planning must rediscover a central, authoritative role in public decision‐making processes for developments. It must be able to innovate and to shape policy programmes for land‐use management, in the knowledge that building ideas for the future must not be a mere slogan but must represent a deliberate, competent approach for a wise and balanced use of environmental resources and buildings.

Now, more than ever, growth is not about quantitative processes but rather improving the quality of the residential built environment without consuming new ground, by recycling decayed or disused buildings, areas and landscapes, by strengthening green approaches, and by basing development processes on the principle of safeguarding values and resources to hand down to future generations. These values become a stimulus for people to get involved. They are also the way to create active cooperation between the public administrations and economic actors from the private sector through new forms of governance.

Agriculture, cultural heritage, care for the landscape and the residential built environment, sustainable production, logistics and integrated infrastructure represent some of the opportunities for stakeholders and resources to come together to drive a new and different kind of growth for local communities.
These processes can inform a territorial plan where town‐planning expertise can establish and use ideas, tools and practices to recreate an open, reassuring dialogue with society and to build a new future.

CONFERENCE ORGANISATION
The conference will be based on plenary sessions and workshops.
• Plenary sessions | These are discussion forums to which researchers from various disciplines are invited.

• Workshops | These are discussion sessions organised in parallel streams. A coordinator and a discussant review the issues arising from the participants’ contributions, raising questions, noting issues, and facilitating the discussion. The programme content may be supplemented or refined according to proposals from attendees. These proposals will be considered by the SIU committee and the workshop coordinators.

The workshop themes are:
• Upkeep of the territory as a form of development
• Reduce / Re‐use / Recycle: new paradigms for urban design?
• Protecting, managing and enhancing public real estate
• Towards a different kind of urban design: practices, projects and strategies for developing and maintaining the territorial capital

Following on from Montreal, Istanbul, San Francisco, Bangalore, Shenzhen, Curitiba, Dakar, Adelaide and Berkeley, it will be the first edition to be held in the European Union.
This 10th edition positions «the city as a vital area of work to grapple with the global sustainability issues».
One year after Rio + 20, ECOCITY 2013 must be a platform to accelerate the transition on a global scale, in partnership with the United Nations. ECOCITY 2013 will be a unique opportunity to organize dialogue between the bearers of a European urban development model and their counterparts in other continents.

GENERAL THEME
Under the heading «the city as a vital area of work to grapple with the global sustainability issues», the Conference will serve as a platform to accelerate change at a global level in partnership with the United Nations. It will be followed by the Summit of the Mexico City Pact Signatories on Saturday 28 September. The two events are very complementary.
ECOCITY will take shape over the 3 days with the Summit and the Exhibition designed as «the ideal place to showcase solutions for sustainable cities» and innovation.

SPECIFIC THEMES
More than 50% of the world population live in cities. Cities crystallize the challenges of sustainable development in the context of an ecological, financial and societal crisis: water, food, energy, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, social relationships, jobs, land, biodiversity and ecological footprint. Only the sum of local solutions will produce global effects.
There is an urgent need to act on a number of indicators which have reached critical thresholds, notably emissions of greenhouse gases, water and biodiversity of which cities are the main source.
The programme of ECOCITY 2013 is based on 4 priority challenges for sustainable cities:

Economic and financial challenges related to the transition towards sustainable cities with zero environmental impact, cohesive and socially inclusive cities, in times of crisis.

The aim of the Master is to envisage a professional figure able to fit between public polices and responses from the bottom, capable of facing the speed of the current urban phenomena using new operational tools and to contaminate different kind of knowledge. A figure that stands across arts and architecture, intelligent and conscious in using different languages, eager in exploring territories and inhabit places, ready in inventing new clients, careful in listening and participating in their projects, poetic in transforming spaces and firm in communicating and pursuing consistently its aspirations.

CONTENTS
• City as a fragmented and contested space. The aim aim is to observe critically the mechanisms of production of the city and to offer instruments of intervention and good practices at the national and international level.
• Arts as tools of knowledge towards the comprehension of the dynamics of transformation of the actual city, as poetic glances able to make visible aspects of the urban whole that are often invisible. The work will be in direct contact with the territory and with international artist visiting the MACRO, MAXXI, MAAM, and with other foreign academies in Rome.
• Architecture as a first occasion to experiment the collective construction of an artefact in the core of the actual city.Such construction will take place in Rome, Talca and Montevideo, and will be followed by a stage of post-production and exhibition of the work.

STRUCTURE
The Master Course is organized in three sessions:
1. Six intensive weeks, once a month, from January to June, as part of which will be seminars and workshops with international guests, explorations and field works. There will also be a photography and video editing workshop, and one of project writing;
2. Design workshops and collective actions in the city, which will take place simultaneously in the venues of the Master partners: Rome (Italy), Talca (Chile) and Montevideo (Uruguay);
3. Elaboration of a thesis.

MAIN THEME
The concept of place works across multiple disciplines. It requires the application of diverse approaches: merging architecture, urbanism, geography, psychology, as a better means of understanding and responding to places.
Place may be defined by activity intrinsic to, and evidenced in, details of the physical surroundings (architectural style, composition, and type) which can be considered as a framing device for daily life.
The aim of the conference is questioning the challenges of global problems in relation to the production of place. Focusing on the necessary components to sustain places, how do we decide when to protect, adjust or transform?

This international workshop explores the main drivers of China’s and India’s development cooperation in Africa. The main hypothesis refers to the Chinese approach which is based on a specific form of State capitalism, whereas the Indian strategy is more market and private sector driven ‐ with the public sector playing a subsidiary but supplementing role. Among other reasons, it may explain why Chinese development aid in Africa is more visible and criticized. Indian cooperation is less, even though its presence is rather substantial, especially in Eastern and Southern Africa.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Contributions are expected from African, Chinese, Indian, European and other academics and practitioners specialized in international development. They should cover two main areas of research as follows:
1. At the macro‐level, a comparative and critical review of Chinese and Indian development cooperation strategies in Africa, using the paradigm of the role of the State versus the private sector.
2. At the micro‐level, empirical research is still lacking and therefore much needed to deliver in‐depth analysis of Chinese and Indian development cooperation in Africa in various key sectors.

ABOUT THE WORKING GROUP
This working group is dealing with current and new development challenges in Europe and Asia proceding from three observations:
1. The post Cold War triumph of the Anglo-American model of capitalism and globalisation has been resisted or mitigated in various ways both in Asia and in Europe, and has not been perceived as an adequate recipe to deliver sustainable development and alleviate poverty worldwide.
2. The beginnings of the 21st century have shown that the predominance of economic and financial transactions across the Pacific and the Atlantic are increasingly counterbalanced by rising transactions within the Eurasian continent leading to the possible emergence of new rules, norms and standards among the American, Asian and European power houses in shaping the future of global governance.
3. The rapid rise of the Asian hybrid market economies confronts a variety of continental European capitalist regimes, which themselves used to diverge from the economic and especially social model of America. Therefore, there is a need to assess how and how far Asian and European development regimes may converge, diverge, or mitigate in transforming the capitalist paradigm.

Therefore, the scientific mission assigned to this new working group is to analyze the current and future prospects of European and Asian capitalisms into the 21st century, looking at both the development regime of each respective region and their growing interdependence, but also at possible implications on the future orientations of global development governance.

PUBLICATION
Based on a selection and revision of papers presented at the workshop, and on a complementary call for additional contributions if needed, the two co‐convening EADI Working Group chairs will envisage to publish a special issue of a scientific journal specialized in international development. An alternative could also be to edit a collective book together with Chinese and Indian publishing partners, or in the EADI book series.

A Tomorrow for Cities:
IFHP Centenary Congress 2013

To celebrate 100 years of operations, IFHP will host a series of events in 2013 including a special Centenary Congress in London!
The Centenary will deal with the need for a new thinking about the present and future development and planning of human settlements. The activities planned for the Centenary aim at creating opportunities to share, discuss and develop solution-orientated knowledge for a better urban future. We also aim to involve more actors in the challenges facing the urbanised world.
The Centenary Congress will be held at UCL ,with events and venues throughout the city, including East and Central London.

MAIN THEME
The IFHP Centenary Congress takes a retrospective and prospective view of cities, asking what tomorrow holds for human settlements, how the future of cities can be shaped, and what solutions are required to establish the sustainable societies of tomorrow (the route to Sustainia?). Cities are constantly changing, forever in transition from one state to the next. Tomorrow's cities need to be resilient to environmental risks and able to withstand economic shocks. They must be inclusive in terms of how they are governed and planned, becoming places in which social justice shapes the physical and economic fabric.

SPECIFIC THEME
• Cities in Transition
Cities are in constant transition, often facing huge changes in their physical fabric, in their economies and amongst their resident populations. Some cities are experiencing huge growth and face the challenge of expanding and adapting infrastructure provision, including the provision of housing.
• Resilient Cities
The idea of resilient cities captures the idea that human settlements must be adaptable to changing conditions, not only economic and environmental conditions and of course climate change, but also a new social complexity generated by the coming together of different groups and different values in urban settings.
• Inclusive Cities
This final theme is about civic leadership, about diversity in cities and about accommodating needs and recognising the rights of individuals, of families and of communities. Building the inclusive city involves political empowerment, fostering sustainable economies and seeing 'city building' as a social project as much as an exercise in physical development.

URBANISTICA PER UNA DIVERSA CRESCITA.
APORIE DELLO SVILUPPO, USCITA DALLA CRISI
E PROGETTO DEL TERRITORIO CONTEMPORANEO

Nei periodi attraversati dalle crisi economiche e sociali più profonde e laceranti, il territorio e la sua trasformazione hanno assunto un ruolo centrale nei processi di sviluppo: dalle politiche keynesiane per il rilancio dell’economia statunitense, dopo la grande depressione del ’29, fino alla ricostruzione e alla crescita dei quartieri urbani che hanno costituito una delle dorsali dello sviluppo post‐bellico dell’Italia del miracolo economico. Questi fenomeni hanno spesso generato processi di crescita squilibrata, in molti casi a spese del territorio e dei suoi valori, producendo fenomeni talvolta difficilmente reversibili su cui hanno prevalso gli interessi economici e politici, i monopoli e i rapporti di forza che hanno depauperato il territorio in un contesto di pianificazione urbanistica incapace di dare forma all’integrazione delle risorse.

Se la storia conferma la centralità e il ruolo dell’ambiente costruito come motore di processi di crescita, di produzione di ricchezza, di creazione di opportunità, il problema attuale è quello di sostenere forme di sviluppo del territorio con piani e programmi sensibili alle interazioni tra crescita economica, sostenibilità ambientale ed equità sociale: in altre parole tra economia,spazio e società.

Oggi si tratta di capire qual è il significato di crescita per il territorio contemporaneo e le sue pratiche, e come questo tema sia da declinare entro una concezione di sviluppo non necessariamente collegata al ciclo produzione‐consumo, né intesa in termini unicamente quantitativi ed economici. È una sfida che richiede un approccio multidisciplinare, che include prospettive legate alla riformulazione di assetti urbani e sociali, a stili di vita e a forme produttive e insediative, con sensibilità e attenzione anche per prospettive teoriche e pratiche indirizzate verso i principi di una “prosperità senza crescita”.

L’urbanistica deve tornare ad acquisire centralità e autorevolezza nei processi di decisione pubblica nel campo delle trasformazioni: deve essere in grado di innovare e di indirizzare i programmi politici di gestione del territorio, con la consapevolezza che costruire idee per il futuro non può essere una retorica, ma deve costituire un approccio consapevole e competente, in grado di fare uso sapiente ed equilibrato delle risorse ambientali e insediative.

Oggi, sempre di più, crescere non significa attivare processi quantitativi, ma migliorare la qualità dello spazio abitabile senza consumare nuovo suolo, riciclare edifici, territori, paesaggi del degrado e/o dello scarto, rafforzare l’approccio ecologico e improntare i processi di trasformazione ai principi della salvaguardia dei valori e delle risorse da trasmettere al futuro. Valori che divengono anche motivo di coinvolgimento e di partecipazione dei soggetti; e che sono il modo per creare cooperazione attiva tra attori economici del settore privato e pubbliche amministrazioni, nel quadro di nuove forme di governance.

I lavori della conferenza si articoleranno in Incontri Plenari e in Atelier. Gli Incontri plenari sono incontri di discussione cui sono invitati a partecipare studiosi di diverse discipline. Gli Atelier sono i luoghi della discussione. Un coordinatore del direttivo SIU ed un discussant rielaborano alcune questioni emerse dai contributi dei partecipanti, pongono domande e sollevano problemi.

The relationship between space and time has been formulated in the most diverse planning theories and has fascinated mankind from the beginning. When planning our cities, when defining projects that may improve the conditions of our society, when proposing decision processes that manage the space around us, when implementing techniques to foster development - the relationship between space and time is something we are constantly working with.

GENERAL THEME
REAL CORP will explore the relationship between time and space, and how the planning practise and theory relates itself to this complex synergy.
Time and space work on different scales, dimensions and topics – and confront us with questions such as:
1. How to plan taking into account time, both past history and future development?
2. How to integrate monitoring within the planning decision processes, such as in the case of natural disasters?
3. How to handle time that cannot be planned, such as long decision processes or real time decisions?
It will be an occasion to discuss about theories and methods but also hands-on experiences from all over to world on how planning deals with space in time in order to plan our cities and regions.

Architect, sculptor, painter, brilliant thinker of his time, a father of modern town planning and a master of the Modern Movement along: all this is Le Corbusier, pseudonym of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris. MAXXI Architettura is devoting to this figure the exhibitionLe Corbusier’s Italy curated by Marida Talamona.

Created in partnership with the Fondation Le Corbusier of Paris, the exhibition benefits from the contributions of an academic committee composed of some of the leading Corbusian experts. 320 original documents and 300 photographs for an exhibition that, adopting a chronological and thematic format, presents the influence of Italy on the training and the work of the master: from the first trips early in the 20th Century to the unbuilt projects for the Olivetti Electronic Calculation centre at Rho and the hospital in Venice from the 1960s.

THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition features a variety of documents, notes on trips, studies, cultural exchanges and personal aspirations, from sketches of the Italian monuments in carnets de voyage to the 18^th century reproduction of the plan of ancient Rome by Pirro Ligorio of which Le Corbusier reproduced a fragment to illustrate his Leçon de Rome, from the correspondence with Pier Luigi Nervi to the six large sheets with drawings sketched during the conference in Milan in the June of 1934 that all document the architect's complex "Italian" education, stimulated by prolonged direct experience and in-depth research in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.

A wealth of photographic material accompanies the exhibition, providing for an integrated reading of a less well-known Le Corbusier in the dialogue he established with his artistic and architectural contemporaries, restoring the full breadth of his intellectual stature and the exceptional nature of his thinking.
