Regenerating Urban Core

[i]Urban Planning and Design Summer School 2008[/i] 11-23 august 2008 in Helsinky, Turku and Jyvaskyla The Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) at the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) is hosting the fourteenth edition of the YTK/IFHP Summer School in Finland. YTK started this programme in 1995 under the auspices of The International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP, founded by Ebenezer Howard in 1913). The course is developed by professors in the field of Urban Planning and Design in cooperation with local experts in the cities of Turku and Jyväskylä. The Director of the Summer School is Professor Ksenija Hiel from the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. The first days of the Summer School are spent in Helsinki region. This part of the course consists of lectures on the theme of the course and Finnish planning, architecture and culture. There will also be a full-day presentation of the City of Helsinki, including an excursion to recent planning projects. In the second part of the course the participants will be divided into two groups and travel to the cities of Turku and Jyväskylä where active project planning and workshops will take place. The field work includes analysing the existing conditions of planning area and suggesting innovative and realistic improvements to the environments. In accordance with the themes of the course participants will make their own proposals which will be presented to the cities’ authorities and experts, the general public and the press. The YTK/IFHP Summer School entitles participants five study credits (ECTS) granted by the Rector of the Helsinki University of Technology. This announcement is an invitation for applying to the YTK/IFHP Summer School 2008 in Finland. It is addressed to students at all levels of studies - and young professionals - from all disciplines related to physical planning.
