Contact Christine Dörner at christine.doerner@archit.uni-weimar.de The Institute of European Urban Studies (IfEU) at the Bauhaus University Weimar, together with the Bauhaus Research School, in collaboration with the Università Roma Tre, Rome, Italy, is seeking suitable candidates (max 10 Ph.D. students) for the DAAD funded bi-national Urban Heritage PhD programme to commence on October 1st 2008. The IfEU at the Bauhaus University is an internationally oriented system of study programmes which is intended as an answer to the changes in the problem horizon of urbanism, concerning all spatially relevant professions. The Institute offers postgraduate architects, landscape and interior architects, urban, regional and spatial planners, geographers, urban and architectural oriented social scientists, ecological scientists, civil engineers, and postgraduate professionals of comparable spatially oriented sciences a contemporary means of education beyond their original studies and promotes inter-disciplinary research with universities, research institutions, international organizations and NGOs worldwide. Topic The doctorate programme Urban Heritage is dedicated to the research complex of cultural heritage in the context of contemporary and future urban development. "Urban Heritage" is aligned with the existing International PhD Programme (IPP) "European Urban Studies". It operates with an expanded concept of "heritage", transcending historic preservation and urban development policies characterised by awareness of history, and is thus topically innovative. This expanded concept considers the political and sociological constitution of the city as deserving conservation in regard to its capacity for social integration and local democracy. The intention is to search for strategies and approaches that employ contemporary challenges society is confronted with (demographic development, mobility, globalisation, multiculturality) to further develop a comprehensive concept of urban heritage.
