The Association of County Councils in Denmark is an autonomous body that represents the interests of all 14 Danish counties, and provides them with services and information. It promotes and supports the principles of regional autonomy and acts as spokesman for the county councils in all matters related to the central government and other national associations, and serves as the central collective wage bargaining organisation of the counties.

Frederiksberg enjoys a special status as both a county and local authority, which means that it is responsible for carrying out regional and local tasks that would be performed separately in the rest of the country either by a county or a local authority. Green City Denmark was initiated by the Danish Ministry of Business and Industry in co-operation with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy, the aim being to establish a visible showcase for Danish environmental technology and know-how. The municipalities of Århus, Silkeborg, Ikast, Herning and Videbæk and the counties of Ringkjøbing and Århus - the area also referred to as "The Green Belt" - would act as the showcase.
