On march the 22nd the DiPSA ( Dipartimento di progettazione e scienza dell'Architettura) of the University of Rome UNIROMATRE organized an international seminar: A greater Europe.
Main themes of this seminar were some reflections on urban policies, physical planning and local development perspectives in the context of the incipient enlargement of the European Union. The seminar was organised by a work team of the DiPSA co-ordinated by Prof. Giorgio Piccinato.
Among the guests there were representatives from different universities, cultural centres and institutions of the access country (see programme).
It is worth remembering the presence of very important officials of the European Commission and of the European Parliament. Moreover, the initiative won the European Parliament sponsorship.
Planum paid a lot of attention to this event promoting and disseminating it through the web and the newsletter. Moreover, planum issued a special CD for the seminar containing the research done by planum's work team.

The seminar garnered a lot of support among the participants. For this reason, we think it is worth continuing to study in depth the arguments related to European Union enlargement in the ambit of planning and related policies. We would try to continue the discussions started in the seminar and to create a virtual space open to contribution from planners, decision makers, students, university departments, stakeholders, journalists, institutions: in a word, the planum users. This space could enhance the understanding of what is really happening in the cities and regions of the access countries. It could give an idea of "who" is doing "what" and could help to understand the "inside information" of the implemented urban and regional policies and plans.

This virtual space would make it possible to get from contents a real impression of what is going on: not just an assessment of indicators well ordered on aseptic tables, not just policy advertising, but sound reasoning on this great challenge.

We are now publishing some articles and links to begin with this new planum topic, but we trust in the participation of the planum users who are involved with planning issues related to the enlargement in order to enrich this "reflections heritage" and to put more contents at disposal so that we may better focus, as planners, this fundamental change in the European Union.

We hope in a fervent participation,
Thank you.
