Landscape units

The landscape units definition is functional to allow the transformation processes and to reinforce the tendency of the territorial coordinate provincial plan (PTCP) to indicate the man-nature dynamics as peculiar values of the territory and to endorse the eco-sustainability principles. Based on landscape ecology analyses, fifty units have been bound and they are collected in 4 territorial sub-systems: east, central, west and north. For every unit, environmental claims and problems have been explored, balanced conditions have been designed, then the different possibilities and the cautions in order to start transformation's processes has been studied.

Subsystem 1 (East)

This area includes part of the Terni valley, the lower Valnerina, the Martani mountains and the Polino mountains. An improvement in its natural value is expected, working on the woods' system, also by hydraulic systems natural engineering projects and the restoration of dimissed quarries. The waters of the river Nera will be preserved, with particular attention to the purification problems, the catchment area and the return of minimum flow.

Subsystem 2 (Central)
This is a boundary area between the highly populated valley, the Terni hollow, the cultivated hills, the Antica valley, Collescipoli, Sangemini, Acquasparta and the hills of the Aia Valley. There is a land drainage project from the previous industrial areas, which could be polluted, and the town and industrial dumps, which from a technical point of view may not be suitable anymore. In some of the Aia tributaries valleys, the slopes must be firmed by a technical design used to restore the banks vegetation.

Subsystem 3 (west)

The Narnesi and Armerini mountains consist of a stripe-shaped ecological corridor, which is one of the most relevant structural features of the province. The limits of this corridor must be protected, avoiding the separation of the woods within the corridor. The damp area of San Liberato lake is very important, and it will be protected and valued. There are problems with the hydroelectric generating stations, which exploit the Tevere and Nera rivers waters: it could be necessary to define a well balanced connection between the hydroelectric use of the waters and the other possible uses.

Subsystem 4 (north)
The Elmo wood, which is very important from a naturalist point of view, and, in general, the territories of Mount Peglia and Mount Piatto will be specially protected. In the boundaries, it will encourage the change of present cultivations within pastures, with the purpose of increasing the surface of the natural habitat. The river environment of the Chiana stream, the Paglia and the high Tevere rivers consists of a structural system, a flowing ecological corridor, which is very important in connecting the sub-systems inside and outside the province.
