The international competition on urban planning
for the new Cornaredo district (NQC) wishes to offer a
moment of reflection on the search for innovative solutions to
the development of a new "gateway" for the city of Lugano
in an area with great development potential.
In 2008, a new road tunnel in the north of the city will link
the centre of Lugano with the motorway. In addition to the 3km-long
tunnel, other transport management measures are also planned,
including a large intermodal node with park-and-ride facilities
for commuters.
The agglomeration of Lugano is one of the most important urban
and economic centres in Switzerland. The aim of this international
competition is to find urban planning solutions for the one million
square metres of the NQC, which will prove attractive for both
users and investors. The winning entry should integrate the functional
requirements of mobility with the formal aspects of qualitative
urban development.
There will first be a preselection phase and prize money of
CHF 160,000 (approx. EUR 100,000).
The closing date for registration is 19th March 2004.
Anyone wishing to enter the competition must register first. The
closing date for entries must arrive no later than 16th April
2004.
The competition itself will start in May, be anonymous and the
results will be ready at the end of July.
Italian is the official language of the competition. Nevertheless,
English contributions (questions, documents requested during the
competition, etc,) will be accepted without restriction.
