The College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities, the School of
Architecture and the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture
are seeking candidates for a non-tenure track faculty position
with the title of Director for the Greenville Studio to begin
after May 1, 2003. The position is jointly funded by Clemson
University and the City of Greenville, South Carolina. The new
director's office and center of activity will be in Greenville.

The successful candidate will hold an accredited degree in either
landscape architecture or architecture and a terminal degree in
one of those disciplines or in another field of study. Other qualifications
include experience with fund raising, project supervision and
budget experience. The successful candidate will also demonstrate
an ability and willingness to coordinate student projects, successfully
fund raise, and work with the Greenville community, public officials,
nonprofit organizations and other stakeholders. The new director
will work with city officials on issues of urban design, land
use planning, and site design and is expected to provide leadership
in the Greenville community. The director may also be expected
to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and supervise interdisciplinary
teams in completing projects. The Studio will undertake design
and planning projects, provide public education on urban design,
serve as a center where design and planning concepts will be discussed
by professionals, city officials and the public, and serve as
a resource for local development through the provision of useful
concepts and the facilitation of partnering.
The Greenville Studio is a collaborative venture of Clemson
University and the City of Greenville intended as a creative
"think tank' to explore and design and development
ideas mostly associated with the downtown area but throughout
the community. The director will work on projects of direct
benefit to Greenville and will coordinate efforts of faculty and
undergraduate and graduate students in architecture, landscape
architecture, and planning. S/he will report directly to the Dean
of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities. The Greenville
Studio also links to numerous plans in the Department and College.
For example, plans are underway for establishing a Ph.D. Program
in Environmental Design and Planning, a Master's in Landscape
Architecture, and a Master's in Real Estate Development. These
initiatives are in the formative stages and envisioned as major
prospects for growth in the College. The Department of Planning
and Landscape Architecture and the Center for Community Growth
and Change are also involved in the direction of the South Carolina
Design Arts Partnership (SC-DAP), a partnership between the University,
the South Carolina Arts Commission, and the Downtown Development
Association. SC-DAP provides community design service throughout
South Carolina. Faculty members are also active in the Mayor's
Institute for Community Design. Students have opportunities to
study for one semester off campus in Genoa, Italy, Barcelona,
Spain or Charleston, SC.

The Greenville Studio is part of the College of Architecture,
Arts and Humanities. The School of Design and Building includes
the disciplines of planning, architecture, landscape architecture
and construction science and management. The former dean of the
college, James Barker, FAIA, is now President of Clemson University.
Dean Janice Schach, FASLA, is a faculty member of the Department
and is past president of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Clemson University, the land-grant institution of South
Carolina, is located mid-way between Atlanta and Charlotte within
two hours from either city. Greenville is a city of 60,000 and
is the major city in Greenville County, which is the most populous
county in the state. The City is committed to quality design,
which is demonstrated in their 25-year commitment to implementing
a series of downtown plans and related efforts in other parts
of the city. Greenville's downtown streetscape designed by Lawrence
Halprin is one of the most successful projects of its type in
the nation. Clemson is at the rural edge of the Greenville-Spartanburg
MSA of about 1,000,000 population. South Carolina is the home
of many historic communities such as Charleston and of two nationally
prominent tourist destinations - Hilton Head Island and Myrtle
Beach. Mountain, lake, river, and coastal environments in the
region are plentiful with the University located at the foothills
of the Blue Ridge Mountains and on the shore of Lake Hartwell.
The adjacent City of Clemson has a population over
15,000. About 17,000 students attend Clemson University. Clemson
was named by Time Magazine as the outstanding public university
for 2000-2001. Clemson has a goal of becoming ranked in the nation's
top-20 public universities by 2010.
