It may be that during the last decade an old antagonism has been overcome: the one between city and countryside, between the sprawling agglomerations and the surrounding receding landscape. Old images are being replaced by new approaches. A new relationship with spazi aperti - open spaces - comes into view. However, even though the basic tendency may be the same in many countries, there are differences. This is demonstrated in this book through a look at Italy and Germany: differences and commonalities between the two countries are illustrated by examples from Palermo, Rome, Prato, Florence, the Milan aggomeration as well as the Emscher Landscape Park, the Frankfurt Green Belt, the Rhine-Main Regional Park, the Landscape Park Mittlerer Neckar, Dessau und Munich.
