Public Spaces Public Life restituisce una ricerca sul centro di Copenaghen che ha per oggetto gli esiti delle politiche di pedonalizzazione e i progetti di ristrutturazione dello spazio pubblico attivati dalla città danese a partire dai primi anni Sessanta. Esiti che testimoniano oggi un aumento della vitalità delle pratiche sociali ed una accresciuta abitabilità dello spazio pubblico.
Nella prima parte "Public spaces - Problems and possibilities" vengono ripercorse le fasi ed i momenti salienti del processo di pedonalizzazione del centro di Copenaghen dal 1962 al 1996. Vengono poi individuati e descritti i fattori climatici e ambientali, le attività e le politiche influenti rispetto all'abitabilità dello spazio pubblico urbano.
Nella seconda parte "Public life - Usage studies 1968-95" e nella terza "Interviews - Data, viewpoints and opinions" vengono descritti gli aspetti metodologici della ricerca per quanto attiene alla osservazione delle pratiche d'uso: sul rilevamento dei flussi pedonali, sull'osservazione della sosta dei pedoni nello spazio pubblico, sugli aspetti metodologici della survey sociale e sul repertorio di tecniche utilizzate.
La quarta parte "Public space - Public life 1996 - Summing up" conclude il libro proponendo alcune riflessioni sul significato odierno dello spazio pubblico rispetto alle pratiche sociali contemporanee e sulle strategie previste dai numerosi recenti processi di riqualificazione.
