Introduction - Basel/Hauptbahnhof - Neuchâtel - Nyon - Zürich/Stadelhofen

The renewal of station's areas

Switzerland is a country where transport is traditionally based on rail. Due to a rather decentral territorial approach, railway modernisation activities seldom concern the construction of high-speed lines but are connected to the nodes of the network that are in fact the stations (NB: the number of stations is higher than 800).

Basel - Hauptbahnhof
(178,428 inhabitants)

More than a national node, Basel is a switching yard in the international railway network. Nevertheless, the station plays a significant role for the town structure. Two new tram lines will connect the station to the outskirts, a flyover will improve the accessibility of the station and as well of the destrict Gundelingen.

Nyon
(16,100 inhabitants)

The Nyon station is certainly a vivid spot within the urban scenery, however, the railway line itself can be considered as a barrier for historic as well as for new districts.

Zürich - Stadelhofen
(365,043 inhabitants)

Stadelhofen is a transit station in the center of Zurich, approximately 2 km away from the main station. The dimension of the station is rather limited (270 x 40 meters), however, it is an important node in the urban transport network. The responsable architect of the renewal (one new platform, preserving the historic building, a higher accessibility, more commercial activities) is S. Calatrava.

The new station will be organised on three floors. Below the platforms there is a kind of shopping gallery, also used for the transit of passengers. Remarkable is the solution to platform no.1 which can be open accessed in its whole length from the urban surrounding. The cover of the platforms is foreseen as a promenade, connecting the station aera to the adjacent hill.
