Polycentric Regional Development in Stockholm - New Report
The Stockholm Region is growing rapidly: its population has increased by 1 per cent yearly over the past 15 years. The Stockholm County Council has adopted in May 2002 the Regional Development Plan for the Stockholm Region. This plan is based on a polycentric structure in which seven regional cores are planned to relieve the pressure on the metropolitan centre and create more balanced growth in the region over a 30-year perspective.
To gain inspiration and learn lessons from other metropolitan regions' experiences, the Office of Regional Planning and Urban Transportation has conducted a study on "Polycentric Regional Development - International Examples". After a first scanning of Berlin, Boston, Dublin, Lyon and Munich, focus is put on how Dublin and Munich have developed the concept of polycentricity in their regional development planning. Relevant conclusions for the Stockholm Region are drawn.
The memorandum presenting the study results is available on www.rtk.sll.se (under Publications, PM Report 2:2003 Flerkärnig regionplanering - International exempel).
