Piano Progetto
Città
by Rosario Pavia
The review came to exist with a precise objective in mind, namely
the desire to bridge the gap between Architecture and Urban Planning
and create a culture which is common to both disciplines. The separation,
their incapacity to communicate and their sectorial nature appeared
not only incongruent to the complexity of urban and territorial
transformations, but also a departure from a tradition in studies
and professional activity. Piccinato and Quaroni, as urban planners,
did not detract attention from architecture at the expense of urban
design, which was responsible for ensuring quality in terms of plan
and proven configuration. In 1969, Quaroni was among the first to
claim that there was a fracture developing between architecture
and urban planning, that is between designers and planners. The
former were increasingly more attached to the notion of building
and design of individual works; the later were always more interested
in the economic and legislative aspect an the overall plan. The
division between the two became evident in the following years with
negative repercussions on both the general quality of the built-up
environment as well as the understanding of new urban processes
and organization of the territory. Furthermore, the division camouflaged
other schisms, other fractures and they were: the consolidation
of sectorial policies; the detachment between infrastructures and
context; and the indifference towards the territory. The review
intends to take hold of this issue, this dividing line, and investigate
current concerns such as the quality of the project; the scale of
projects and the plan for public works. The recent issues have dealt
with these concerns.

Department
of architecture and urban planning research papers
by Alberto Clementi
The DAU research
paper series started in 1996 and its main objective was the publication
of research conducted and in our department. The publication is
of interest and caters above all to those who work specifically
in the field. Over time it has become a vehicle for selected research
material which reflects the state of the art on issues which are
of concern to our sector. The following monographs are included
in the series: Itaten (vol.2: Abruzzo, A new image; vol.3:
Settlement structures in the middle Adriatic area; vol. 5 Molise,
landscapes in change; vol.7: Marches, shapes and places of transformation)
and Returb (vol.4: Infrastructures and the urban planners'
structure plan; vol.8: Infrastructures and plans/projects for the
territory). More recently there has been published research conducted
by DAU in conjunction with local authorities, some of which are:
Peschici. A preliminary study for the new PRG; From Station to City.
A Plan for the disused railways area in Pescara; Loreto Aprutino.
A preliminary study for the new PRG. Currently the issues are divided
into three sections (Research, Ph.D. programmes, Teaching) which
reflects the theoretical approach, experimentation and teaching
of the department.
