VIS.I.T (VISual Information Technology) is an inter-disciplinary laboratory dedicated to develop human-centered, powerful, and interactive 3D graphics tools in a variety of fields. The mission of the lab is to present concepts, techniques, as well as massive or complex numerical data through Interactive Computer Graphics, Virtual Reality and Human Computer Interaction technologies.

The research activities regard mainly Image Processing, Multimedia networking and/or communication, Interactive Computer Graphics, Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces in the fields of:

Cultural Heritage and Landscape Projects

The VIS.I.T. Lab is conceived as an open space room with several workstations and an Onyx2 SGI graphic supercomputer connected with the Origin 3800 and the IBM SP Power4 (starting from July) massively parallel computer of CINECA by a high-bandwidth interconnection. Some 3D graphic applications developed in the lab can benefit from being viewed in realtime in two semi-immersive Virtual Reality environments: the CINECA's Virtual Theatre (Vis.I.T. Theatre) based on SGI Reality Center technologies and a Workbench BARCO Baron. Moreover the lab features include various output devices for producing color prints, A4 transparencies and a video suite for producing professional-quality videotapes.

Research at VIS.I.T is organized around projects that involve public and private research institutions in Italy, Europe and USA. The technical staffs of the projects include typically a mix of people from High Performance System division, fellows and PhD and undergraduates students from Universities of the CINECA's Consortium.
