Founded in 1969
by Ministry of Public Education, now under the supervision of Ministry
of University and Scientific Research, CINECA is a consortium formed
by 18 Italian Universities and the National Research Council (CNR)
The Consortium
goals are:
To
promote the use of the most advanced information processing systems
to support scientific and technological research
To
produce IT based services for Private and Public Corporates
To
develop and manage Innovative Information Technology Services
The
VIS.I.T. (VISual Information Technology) is the Cineca inter-disciplinary
laboratory dedicated to develop human-centered, powerful, and interactive
3D graphics tools in a variety of fields, including cultural
heritage, bioengineering and scientific visualization. Some 3D
graphic applications developed in the lab can benefit from being viewed
in realtime in a semi-immersive Virtual Reality environment: the CINECA's
Virtual Theatre (Vis.I.T. Theatre).
.
CINECA possesses
a computing environment endowed with the best technologies available,
the most advanced hardware resources, and highly qualified specialists.
The computer
room is the heart of Cineca. Surfing Cineca's website it is possible
to visit the supercomputer room, look an interactive map, have a short
tour thanks to an interactive video streaming.
.
CINECA is remarkably
involved at the European level, through EU-funded
research projects, as, for example, TMR, MAST, HCN, PECO, ESPRIT-HPCN,
ENVIRONMENT, TEN-telecom, INFO 2000. The Consortium takes part in
the projects making its high-performance computing technology and
network system available to European partners. Thanks to the flexibility
of the programs developed and the technologies implemented, the Consortium
is in fact well-known at the international level as the top European
center for public and private research. |
