Cultures of Cities: the fourth Biennial of Towns and Towns Planners

The 4th Biennial of Towns and Town Planners in Europe will be held at the conference centre De Doelen in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from September 20th to Saturday 22nd 2001.
This biennial will consist of a three day seminar, and an exhibition and excursions
It is now avaible the updated program of the seminar, the parallel workshops and the excursions.

General theme and sub-themes
Discussion about "Cultures of Cities" always have to consider the tension between "change"and "continuity".
The theme applies to different aspects like developments on the level of the whole world influencing the locality, social-economic aspects of globalization, the value of fostering existing cultures, developments of the citizens identity and new functions for public spaces.
The general theme of "Culture of Cities" will be discussed more specifically in the following sub-themes:

1)Global forces: cultural aspects of globalization

2) Cultural heritage: development and protection

3) Cultural identities: developments of the citizens identity and cultural encounters

4) Streetlife: new design for public space

Aim
The aim is to encourage a professional exchange of information and experiences amongst planners, designers, and politicians in Europe. It is of professional interest to analyse the way planners react in different cities on cultural developments. A systematic comparison of cultural developments and planners approaches will offer an interesting overview.
Urban planning is instrumental to achieve spatial policy goals in European countries. The way urban planning approaches these policies and the effectiveness of the various approaches should be the focus of a professional discussion. The red file should be how to achieve lasting cultural qualities in future cities, taking into account the many influences on the many cultures in cities
The biennial could result in contributions to the professional discussion about the New Charter of Athens of 1998, the European Council of Town Planners' principles for planning cities.

The exhibition
Projects that illustrate the biennial themes will be exhibited.
The presentation of projects per country will be organised around the four themes of the congress.
The projects have been selected by the Permanent International Working Party (PIWP): some new information about the exhibition are now available.
